I thought I had repaired all the damage to the wiring (also replaced the o2 sensor to be safe), but I had no improvement.

Also some rodent damage to the wiring in the driver quarter panel well where the harness runs through before it comes through the rubber grommet into the back of the car. I thought I had repaired all the damage to the wiring (also replaced the o2 sensor to be safe), but I had no improvement.

I was going to replace the dme, but the fact that I saw what looked like good data from all 4 o2s for a short time when I revered them makes me think this may not solve the problem.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

99 c2 cab 106k miles. Codes: p0134, p1115, p1119. Moderate rodent damage to some wiring in the engine compartment. Also some rodent damage to the wiring in the driver quarter panel well where the harness runs through before it comes through the rubber grommet into the back of the car. I thought I had repaired all the damage to the wiring (also replaced the o2 sensor to be safe), but I had no improvement. The problem sensor seems to be the driver side pre-cat. I began to question my wiring, so I bypassed the damage all together and spliced right into the main harness well after the damage. The driver side pre-cat was still always at .435v. I thought it must be the DME, so I decided to run a test that I would not usually be comfortable with, but I figured the worst it would do is damage the DME, which I was ready to replace. I hot swapped the precat o2s since I had enough slack with the bypass I had done. I plugged the passenger pre-cat o2 into the harness for the driver pre-cat o2. Right away I began to see what looked like correct o2 performance for the driver side pre-cat dme values (this is the first time I had seen any activity from the driver pre-cat o2 harness). I then plugged the driver side pre-cat o2 into the harness for the passenger side pre-cat harness. The values looked good right away. All 4 o2s were now giving what looked like correct data (obviously driver and pass pre-cat data is reversed, but this is the first time I had seen data for all 4 sensors). After a few seconds the voltage for the problem harness came down to a steady .440v. One bank started to lean out so I shut it down. I unplugged the negative on the battery for a few hrs and fired it with everything hooked up correctly, back to .435v. I re-grounded the problem harness just in case and tried again with the same result but with two short blips to .440v, then back to a steady .435v. I think the wiring is solid, but anything is possible. Does anyone have any ideas? I was going to replace the dme, but the fact that I saw what looked like good data from all 4 o2s for a short time when I revered them makes me think this may not solve the problem. I am thinking that the rodent damage caused a short that damaged the DME, but I would expect this to cause a condition where I could never see any data from that harness. Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to clearly explain this strange situation. Thanks guys

POST 2Original post

This is a very uneducated suggestion but have you verified that you have a solid connection on your grounding strap? It's a long shot but can't hurt.

POST 3Original post

Good luck there, sounds intermittent., maybe some more dammage to the wires? Might sound crazy but what if you pull the whole harness from the car and go one by one, checking and twisting. Worst case, just replace the whole thing with another one from salvage yard. This will rule out the wiring. My guess would be DME is fine if it gave you correct readings at some point.

POST 4Original post

Next time when engine has warmed up and it happens (i.e., bank 1 precat sensor signal = steady 0.44v), without disconnecting and disturbing any O2 sensor connectors, back probe the bank 1 precat O2 sensor and make sure you have 12v and ground supplied to the connector/sensor. If you do, the sensor is likely bad. If you don't then try to wiggle the harness and see if that changes anything.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Slakker and Youri. I think I misread the wiring diagram. I thought the black wire going to BS 21/1 (I thought BS 21/1 was a ground point) was the ground wire. Based on a different wiring diagram I saw for a similair car it looks like it grounds itself to the exhaust and BS 21/1 is a "bridge point". I obviously don't know how to read a wiring diagram, maybe I should have learned before hacking into the harness, haha. I am trying to pull the rear carpet to find BS 21/1 now so I can run the wire i currently have grounded to it instead. I attached the relevant part of the diagram, but it looks like BS 21/1 is not a ground so hopefully this will fix it.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ahsai. It turns out I did in fact misread the wiring diagram, that black wire was not a ground (I think it is for the o2 sensor heater). I really appreciate the help. I would have probably replaced the DME if I did not post, so you guys just saved me time and money. Time to smog this thing and get it back on the road.
