I have been looking at 996 prices for the last 3 years - and despite what people say, they have not really changed much on the base 996's.

When I said money is an object that means I can't justify buying a 60k used car as a toy.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone! I finally sold the car albeit at significant loss. Now I'm contemplating a 997 or 4s. I have a z3 coupe with m technik pkg that i will most likely would have to sell before getting another sports car.. anyways, Any thoughts? Suggestions or opinions are welcome.
I bought it a month ago from a scumbag dealer (indeed a used car dealer) in Waterbury CT. The car turned out to be a total lemon. Scored 2 cylinders, burning oil, leaking oil in two places, major accident, bondo all over the place, everyday something would fail from headlight washers to cel, wipers..etc. before you ask yes I had it checked out but not thoroughly enough as it turned out.
997 C4S is nice car and likely $39-$46K for nice 2006/07 example depending on year/miles/options
996 C4S for $23-$28K you can find a really nice sorted well serviced example with recent clutch and IMS
i think you'd be really happy with the 996 C4S - of course i'm biased because i'm on my 3rd
Turbos I saw online are over 40k with hi miles. Can't find any decent 996 c4s under 30k, If anyone knows someone who is selling a referral would be appreciated. 997 at my freinds dealership (manhattan motorcars) is reg coupe 2006 for 38k. Has 40k miles on it and has been checked out by their mechanics. I'm not too crazy on the price and the color - silver
The C2(S), C4S, and turbos are all different cars that have a different feel to them. It really comes down to preference. Not sure if you got to drive the 40th much but the 2 wheel drive with the limited slip differential is going to be completely different than the 4 wheel drive of the C4(S) and turbo. Take your time and test drive lots of cars. Being on the "hunt" is half the fun.
The turbos feel even heavier but the power makes up for it, IMO. Stock, strangely enough, the turbos don't feel as quick as they should to me. But add on a tune and 200 Cell Cat or Decat exhaust and they open up and feel great.
now thats funny - disclosure at auction hahahahahahahaha
"before we begin bidding we would like to disclose the oil leaks, the smokey exhaust, the cracked cylinder head, the IMS needing attention and the news that the previous owner shot and killed the salesman who he purchased from...lets begin"
Have you sat in a 997 ? The interior is a major leap forward from the 996. Styling-wisethe 997 exterior can be seen as retro/nicer or retro/ done. Personally I like it but I can see both sides of the argument . Performance should be a subtle upgrade. Personally, I avoid 996's like the plague but I too have a bad 996 story to tell. Ultimately you need to drive both and see which you like more.
i think the 2008-2009 997 C4S's are really nice - and i believe the 2008 and later have no IMS issues.
this will be my next car.
but the OP has had a crappy experience with the 996 and should at least experience the 996 C4S - he'd save quite a bit and eventually save up for the 997
if money is no object buy the 997 C4S now
Money is an object lol. If I get a decent trade on my z3 coupe plus whatever I got out of 996 sale I should be able to get 997. Probably not 4s.. I don't know how the real life prices are
I'm in ny metro. It nice car but I don't want a 99...not for 35k rebuilt motor or not, I think I'm pretty set on 4s or 997.. if I can get one for a decent price and good condition.
Not to change subject but if you get a chance visit my cousin's gelato company on Houston st across the st from Katz deli - He jus got written up in Forbes Magazine - Il laboratorio Del Gelato. It will take your mind off of car stuff.

Just more opinions.
The 06-08 still have an imsb. But there is a question if they ever fail, and if they do its not very often. Also when I had my 996 engine rebuilt the mech told me the 3.8 had more cylinder problems than the 3.6. So my conclusion for you is a well sorted 06-08 base coupe.
997.1 Base Coupe owner chiming in here (owned since new). Fantastic car, lightest of the bunch, and never even once did I wish I had AWD (or even an S).
Congrats on the sale. And now I know that I was right about your car BEING the e-bay car. Searches for your car's VIN brings up the picture of...the car from the e-bay auction:

I have the build sheet from Porsche to verify that it is a 40th Anniversary Edition! 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Jahre 40th Anniversary Edition 3.6L 6 Cylinder - 6 Speed Manual Low Miles - Stitched Steering Wheel - GT3 Side Skirts - unique shift **** & boot - aluminum trim rings around the instrument cluster - 911 door sills - The engine alone was $15,000 option in 2004 if ordered separately but was stock to the 40th Anniversary Edition Model. Hello and thank you for viewing this very nice 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera. This Porsche is in very good shape for its year, and has low mileage of 82k. Shes looks and runs great, and is very fun to drive. Shes powered by a 3.6L 6 cylinder engine, that starts right up with no issues, and runs fine. There are no check engine or maintenance lights on at all. The 6 speed manual, shifts perfectly through every gear with no issues, has no worn synchros, and has plenty of life left in the clutch. Every button and option works perfectly, heat, A/C all power options everything. The interior is in great shape with very little wear and tear, with no major blemishes. The exterior is in great shape, with no surprises and is not in bad shape at all. The Porsche runs great, I put about 140 miles on her, she ran and drove great with no problems at all. This is one really nice Porsche that's fun to drive, and needs its new owner today to enjoy her! Terms of sale: We have a $300.00 dealer documentation fee associated with the sale of this vehicle. And if money is "object" why go for Porsche again? TT is a very expensive car to maintain as well. I am partial to AMG cars now; C63 from 2008-2010 are amazing cars and with IPE exhaust they sound orgasmic.
Mercedes C63 AMG w/ iPE Exhaust! LOUDEST C63 EVER! - YouTube
Correct it's the car. And I found out its been resold 4 times at the auction between dealers to wash the title. The scumbag dealer that I bought it from is All Care auto aka Precision auto in Waterbury CT.
I am not a big fan of MB, I had one in past, just as unreliable as most German cars. When I said money is an object that means I can't justify buying a 60k used car as a toy. Still want to own a 911 so a 2006 997 or a 996 4s is more affordable provided I sell my z3.
Last turbo p car I owned was a 86 944 lol. Turbo lag was atrocious
how's the lag on 996 TT? Never drove one. Not that many good ones for sale in my price range..
It's the wrong time of the year to be bargain shopping. My recommendation is to take your time - the hunt is half the fun. Get to know the market and what to look for with these cars. Then, after Labor Day, the prices will go down.
Every year in the spring I see a bunch of "prices are on the rise" posts, doesn't matter what model. Yes, every year in March-April-May, people get tax refunds and spring fever and prices go up temporarily. Sell in the spring, buy in the fall.
Sorry that you got a bad 996 on the first go around, but that's even more reason to take your time on this one. The 996tt is a great car. Personally, I like the Mk I aero coupes a lot, and they are a smoking bargain compared to the 996TT - $20k will get you a fantastic Mk I aero coupe, most of which will have the dual row IMSB. And, the C4S is a great car too - just make sure the IMSB has been addressed.
This. So much this.
You got burned once by not really knowing the model well enough. Regardless of which model, get to know it really well.
While there may be infighting between the forums sometimes, one common theme on Rennlist is that we're always willing to help someone in need.
So get to know the model(s) you are interested in and then as you start finding candidates reach out to RL to get some experienced help evaluating it for you.
OK - here is what I would do if finances are a concern. I have been looking at 996 prices for the last 3 years - and despite what people say, they have not really changed much on the base 996's. The c4's have dropped significantly but seem to have leveled out. The 997's are still plummeting in value.
I would get a well sorted 996 with full leather and all the issues addressed with mid mileage. You would drive it for a couple years and it will still be worth about what you paid. Maybe start a "find me a 996 thread". I bet the guys here could find you a good one.
From where you were, to where you want to be is a question only you can answer. I think a C4S with some kind of dealer warranty or serious ownership history back to new would be in your future.
It's been said and is true that the best bang for the buck is the mk1 aero cars. Also, I see the turbo cars lagging in price where they are starting to look attractive. There's still a +$20k split between a mk1 and a turbo, so money means something.
If you're on Jalopnik at all, they just had a segment now about the worst car mistakes ever made. Some of them were pretty sad.
I think what I'm gonna do is drive my mk1 aero for a year or two, upgrade a few things including the IMSB and then sell and get a turbo so I'm completely out of the IMSB worry spin(but into several other worry spins).
theres no comparing a mercedes sedan to a porsche 996. relax, be patient, put your effort into selling your current car and then check out the market.
don't buy any 996 unless it has full service history, upgraded IMS/etc.
There is a 2001 911 C4 LS2 conversion on eBay. 420hp and the seller is asking $22,000 or best offer. Hey, at least you'll never have to worry about the IMS again.
I haven't been able to find it. Last night went to a 2017 porsche unveiling event in Manhattan motorcars. Some nice cars there.. anyway one of the reps was trying to convince me to buy a 2011 991 cpo. I'm having second thoughts about it although it's pretty expensive it's a whole different car. Doubt I'll pull the trigger, the wife was giving me the looks already lol
look in Canada! kijiji or trader.ca..a bit of paperwork but no big deal to import..and instant 25% discount with
exchange rate...numerous turbos languishing in the high 30 to low 40 us$ range. just bought a 04 4s 45k miles, from a dealer for 23 and they did 3k $ worth of maint/repair to boot.
hahaha... I love the part when Marvita says "I avoid 996's like the plague". Being this is a 996 forum, that's like going to the someone's house for dinner and mentioning at the dinner table that you "avoid the the Brown's food like the plague because of the food poison one time", but "I'm here for the gossip". ha!
