Your posting prompted me to go double check my old OEM pump, which I saved when a new one was installed in 02/2013 at 67K miles.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found an old thread on this but it was inconclusive. I just bought a waterpump from Sonnen Porsche (my local porsche dealer). Part number 996.106.011.57. Came in a Porsche parts box. From what I can tell, the impeller is metal. Also the part is made in Italy (stamped on the pump case). The part number is also stamped on the pump. There are some other numbers on the pump - 2.67091.02.
I thought Porsche was using composite impellers. Anyone have an idea as to what is going on here? Also thought Pierburg made the pumps in Germany for Porsche.
TIA
I have seen aftermarket pumps with metal impellers; I don't think I have ever seen a Porsche-branded box with a metal impeller for the M96.
Jake belongs to the "don't use metal impellers" camp, if that's what you were wondering.
When I google the part number you supplied, I got only two results - one of them being this thread - which strikes me as very odd, so I poked around a little more on Pelican and found:
996-106-011-57-M965, brand shows as "Geba" and does not have the OEM supplier designation; has a metal impeller.
996-106-011-57-M2244, brand shows as Pierburg and has the OEM supplier designation, has composite impeller.
None of the Geba-branded pumps I saw for other motors had the OEM supplier designation, so it's an aftermarket (non-OEM) part - not sure how to explain the Porsche box for a non-Porsche part.
I think I found a clue. This is from the Porsche dealer parts website.
Part Number "996.106.011.56" was found for Porsche , but we could not verify the part fits the selected vehicle.
You may still purchase this part below.

The thing is, it sounds/feels like metal, not composite. Not sure how to describe that but when you flick it with your finger it makes a "pinging" noise. I may be wrong, it could be composite, but it sure seems like metal (aluminum maybe) to me.
Also it says right on it that it is made in Italy. The part number also changed to 57 on the Auto Atlanta site
One potentially confusing issue is that "composite" doesn't always mean "plastic" - composite materials can include a variety of ingredients, including powdered metal. A metal impeller would typically be machined, and it would be uncoated or anodized. Even if it was powdered metal (like a lot of the other "castings" for our car), it would look more metallic and have visible grain.
^This but OTOH I can't explain the "ping" sound. Does it feel cold to the touch compared with touching the pump body?
Or check continuity with a multimeter
Heh. I was going to suggest scratching it to see if the brown is simply a coating, but advising someone to start whittling away at a new water pump seemed like questionable advice...
OK so I checked it with a multimeter and the impeller does NOT conduct (the pump body does). I still think the impeller is aluminum with some sort of coating on it. Maybe to protect the aluminum from corroding. Guess I'd have to take a cross section to really figure it out, and that's not happening. The impeller does feel "cool" to the touch.
Does anyone know why Porsche might have changed the part number? Would they do it for a new supplier or would it be a design change?
Along this vein, blow the car up with about 10 pounds of TNT and then check to see if the impeller is still intact.
Let this be a lesson - Don't drink and post. This seemed a lot funnier when I posted it last night.

At first glance, the impeller looks like its metallic. But closer examination suggests its made of some kind of hard composite material...not really "plastic" in my opinion.
