Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace wp and t-stat' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect manifolds' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So I am now looking for some used cats that are still good.

Suggestion
I inspected the manifolds to ensure they had no signs of any impact and turned them around to see if anything -- pieces of converter -- fell out.

Suggestion
If the noise is present from a cold start or just moments after one can with the belt off start the engine and let it idle/run long enough to verify the noise is present or not.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was looking for rattle noise on left side of engine. A video that I found had the exact same noise, so I replaced WP and T-stat. It was time anyway as there are 60 K miles. Also did Fister D exhaust from Darin. Finally got it all back together with only 2 extra screws leftover.
Started er up and still had same rattle. Damn! So started banging on engine parts for rattle. Left side cat rattled, right side quiet. Plus when I looked at OBD it showed cat sensor. So I am now looking for some used cats that are still good.
Oh well I learned a few things about how this car is put together.
About the Fister D, it is better than stock but........
The PSE on my previous 996 sounded much better to me. It had a hard BRAAAP to it that I liked.

Too late for you but for the benefit of others: If the water pump is the source of the noise there should be play when one tries to move the water pump pulley about, side to side, in and out. The play may not be much but with the belt off one has other accessory drives to test for play and compare to each other.
The belt can have a sharp edge that arises from the play causing the belt to not track true and rub.
If the noise is present from a cold start or just moments after one can with the belt off start the engine and let it idle/run long enough to verify the noise is present or not.
For replacement converters, what I did when one converter got too noisy -- and had for some time been triggering a CEL with a P0430 error code -- is I sourced two exhaust manifolds at a Porsche salvage business off a similar MY car. I inspected the manifolds to ensure they had no signs of any impact and turned them around to see if anything -- pieces of converter -- fell out. Last thing was I then shook the heck out of each one listening for any rattle.
Once I satisifed myself I had a good set I didn't sit them down. Some people toss these around and this can cause the brick inside to fracture and then one just buys a converter with the same problem as the one he has on his car.
I took the converters to the dealer service department and with some other work had the tech remove the old converters and install the "new" ones. The exhaust was quiet again and so far -- it has been over a year -- the CEL has not come on once.
Oh, the cost? I think I paid $450/each which is less than half the price of factory converters. Plus I have the old ones which when I get aorund to it I can take to a converter recycler and probably get $75/each for the old ones.
