Suspected cause
Not sure about the 997 but I assume it is probably the same.
Leading evidence: 'same' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'same' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check slippage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You do not have to try to take off from a stop in third to check for slippage.

The car was at Fairfield Porsche in CT, seemed clean exterior, mechanically not sorted out yet, they were gonna run it thru their shop.

I think I remember Macster saying that's not a good way to test a clutch.

Suggestion
It seems to me that the likelihood of encountering this issue during a test drive - unless the car was being dumped BECAUSE the clutch was starting to slip - seems low.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was able to detect no change in pedal feel when my 99's clutch was on the way out.
Hi all, in my quest for a 996 c4s or 997.1 I looked at a car over a weekend it's a 2006 997 base coupe. The car was at Fairfield Porsche in CT, seemed clean exterior, mechanically not sorted out yet, they were gonna run it thru their shop. I had a chance to test drive it.. the question is like this: the clutch pedal feels pretty tight. My previous 996 clutch was also tight and I knew it was on its way out. My bmw clutch is effortless . How is 996/997 clutch supposed to feel when it's in good condition?
The 996 clutch pedal has a helper spring which results in a slightly "vague" feel. If you have a very heavy clutch this could be a sign that it is on the way out. Not sure about the 997 but I assume it is probably the same.
The diaphragm spring on your pressure plate is what disengages your clutch. Wouldn't a 'heavier' clutch pedal just mean the pressure plate is in good shape, since the diaphragm spring doesn't feel weak/worn out?
Put the car in 3rd gear, and try to get it going. If it doesn't slip, clutch should be good.
1. I think I remember Macster saying that's not a good way to test a clutch.
2. If a shopper did that to my Porsche, I'd be inclined to kick THEM in the b*lls.
You'll get excessive wear starting in third. I'm just saving you the wall of text that is about ensue for suggesting to start rolling in 3rd. You're only doing this once to determine the condition of the clutch.
I need to defer to the many more experts in here. My original clutch was smooth when the car was new, but slave cylinder failure caused it to go erratic then soft, and upon inspection clutch plate was close enough to replace, and now it's much better but not as smooth as new. "Inconsistent" I call it. A slight "clunk" sometimes. But not heavy.
Another question: so the car is being sold by a porsche dealer, should I request a PPI done by another shop or they (the dealer) would normally do it for a fee and give me a certified report? If the car checks out okay, I want to buy an extended warranty, if so does anyone know which one is the best one? I know there was discussion on here regarding that but I think it got tangent a while back lol. Thanks for all help
He meant "cue Macster."
I was able to detect no change in pedal feel when my 99's clutch was on the way out. Other than the slipping in 4th/5th gear, there were no symptoms.
You do not have to try to take off from a stop in third to check for slippage. On the highway, shift into 3rd or 4th at around 3.5K RPM and fully depress the accelerator. As long as the car is fully into the power band, there should be enough torque going through the clutch to get it to slip if it's very close to being worn out. I'm not sure that "testing" the clutch as advised in post 3 would be useful for anything except ending a test drive prematurely...
Also worth noting that my clutch did not begin to slip until the clutch was almost completely gone - i.e. I was down to the rivets in two or three spots. It seems to me that the likelihood of encountering this issue during a test drive - unless the car was being dumped BECAUSE the clutch was starting to slip - seems low.
OP, since the clutch disc is a consumable, it won't be covered by the warranty anyway. Odds are you already know this, but I did want to point it out since you're concerned about it and mentioned the warranty in the same thread.
I owned a Boxster and a 996 at the same time. The Boxster was on the original clutch at 60k miles. I would call the clutch effort medium. The 996 was very stiff/heavy. I replaced the spring but no change. Had the clutch replaced (was almost worn out) and it is as light as a Honda's.
