I think it will darken once it's used a bit and the oils from my hands soak in to it.

I have used Leatherworld and I'm super happy with the results...

I used some shoe polish to darken it a little, it feels so much better I'm over having to have it look perfect!

Suggestion
Be sure to check the savanna with dct....not sure if they've corrected the leather color as it's been off in the past

Suggestion
I think you'll get even better results if you use the dye with the wheel off the car since you can liberally apply it without worrying about getting the rest of the car dyed.

Suggestion
Also, I think that all 9x6/9x7's use the same steering spline, so any ebay take-off wheel from any 996/997/cayman/boxster should fit, though you will need one with a triangular airbag if you want to reuse your current airbag.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have this same steering wheel. I hate it, I almost did not buy this car because of it. The PO is a friend of mine I gave him crap when he bought it.
Anyway, I'm too cheap to go for a 799 replacement wheel. Has anyone used these folks
http://www.classic9leathershop.com/?
I used to do really sweet vinyl steering wheel wraps back in the day, figure I could do this if it is good quality.
Hmmm, I can't say I blame you...it looks like it belongs in a Rolls Royce or something along those lines - not that there's anything wrong with that
Anyway, someone posted these guys not too long ago

I believe they're leather and very reasonably priced. I've seen the Classic 9 site but haven't used their products. I have used Leatherworld and I'm super happy with the results... see here

The steering wheel refinish is on the last page. Good luck whichever way you go...
Mine came with that dark wood trim option for the wheel, shifter and e-brake handle. The wood cracked on the wheel (apparently universal--just a matter of when) so I bought a traditional savannah beige leather wheel from a guy here on the forum. Why don't you just get the 996 wheel you want on eBay? There are numerous OEM options.
RAID steering wheels from Gert at Carnewal.com are very nice... Less than an OEM wheel and they come with an airbag as well.
Many options, here's an example:
DCT Motorsports also sells recovered wheels in leather or alcantara (core exchange required):

Also if you buy one with additional electronic steering wheel functions, they won't connect...
I would call up Alan Gun and talk to them

I assume that their cover replaces all of the leather on the wheel. If it does, you might be better served buying a 3-spoke from eBay in whatever color you can get the best deal on. Then you can sell your original wheel - who knows maybe it will command a premium due to rarity
I would do a search here on Alan Gun first. Plenty of threads on him. Why would anyone embark on projects before doing research or solid recommendation is beyond me.
I had mine wrapped by Dallas Custom Wheel.
http://www.dallassteeringwheel.com/sw1.htm
They added extra padding and some nice deviated red stitching. Quality of the leather was as good as OEM and the work was top notch.
Still trying to wrap my head around that color combo. Gawd.
You could always pick up a 4-spoke and band-saw it into a Knight Rider wheel. That would be sweet. (Rendering courtesy of MS Paint)
Well I have the same wheel as yours and thought all was well. Then your post got me thinking, you know a thicker flat bottomed wheel would much better suit this car. I justified it by convincing myself how much better it will feel on the track. Not sure what happened next but I just ordered a custom wheel from DCTMS - savanna beige t96 with perforated sides, smooth top and bottom, red stitching with a red 10mm leather ring TDC. Damnit ! Will this craziness ever stop?

Man you guys are mean. The OP's wheel looks just like mine. And I kinda like it. Mine has cracked on the lower right wood section, though. Dallas Steering Wheel they can fix the wood for a couple hundred bucks, but after reading this thread, I'm thinking I should get the whole thing covered by them in Savannah Beige leather.
Received word from Ivan that my wheel is ready for shipment. Can't wait to see it in person. The pic looks a bit light for Savanna beige. Hope it was just the light the pic was taken in.
Dallas did my steering wheel too and I love the craftsmanship. I had the works done to it including covering the back in leather and it turned out great.
I did question it with Ivan. Didn't receive a response on that inquiry. All I got back was my tracking #. Hoping it will be correct. I'm sensing it will be a huge PITA to get corrected if it's not.

more interior pics.car currently has the graphite grey recaro gt3 race buckets, and it use to have black hard shell sport seats witch i thought added a nice contrast to the graphite grey.all the alcantara trim work was done by dallas custom.center console and additional trim pieces painted by bumperplugs
I picked up a black steering wheel on ebay for 100 shipped. I've gotten a redye kit from leatherworld. As soon as the garage warms up, i'll post the results!
Nice! Mine is holding up well. I think you'll get even better results if you use the dye with the wheel off the car since you can liberally apply it without worrying about getting the rest of the car dyed.
MY DCTMS T96 wheel arrived today. Really nice quality. It's just a tad lighter than the leather in my car. I think it will darken once it's used a bit and the oils from my hands soak in to it. Overall I'm pretty pleased with it.
Thanks! ReidN mine took right at 6 weeks to come in. It took about an hour to install. You will need to transfer all of the mounting brackets from your old wheel. Make sure you don't over tighten the bracket that mounts the air bag to the wheel. It has springs on the backside for the horn. Didn't see that the first time and my horn was stuck on. I had to remove and start over to fix. You don't need a steering wheel puller. Loosen the the 24mm nut about halfway and jiggle the wheel until it loosens up and then remove the nut and take off. This video will walk you through it.

Finally decided to install my DIY wheel. I used some shoe polish to darken it a little, it feels so much better I'm over having to have it look perfect!
That steering wheel looks great, excellent job!
Here's what I did with my nasty looking wheel... Before and after... Total cost was $11 for the Chinese piece of leather from eBay and about 1.5 hours of my time. It's a whole different vibe every time I get in the car to drive it now. Plus, the added thickness of the black leather feels nice when gripping the wheel. Perfect? No.... Smiles anyway, Yes!
I would love to change mine out as I have the wood inserts in mine as well.
But one thing I've noticed that in comparison to my Cayenne's steering wheel the one on the 996 feels like a ship wheel. It might only be a difference of an inch or so but it feels significant. Are there any smaller options for replacement that still keep the airbag intact?
Look at Carnewal. They've got 3 different size wheels available and the prices are reasonable (much better than stock which seem fairly ridiculous to me).

The biggest problem for me is that they're all black...
It's not everybody's cup of tea, but I replace mine with a cup wheel (pun intended):
I'm really enjoying it. The smaller diameter makes it feel more responsive, but not twitchy. I REALLY like the suede. I was not sure that I would. Now for my connector to come in so I can get the horn working.
I wanted to give you a shout out for the tutorial you did on the iPad mini. I watched it a couple of times and did the job myself. Fantastic mod!
Thanks for blazing the trail!
