Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, all. My '02 Cab has 6 way power seats with crests and drivers memory, and are in so-so shape. No structural damage, except for some loose stiching on the top of the drivers seat. I purchased a pair of cherry non-power heated seats from a fellow Rennlister and am torn between installing these (with modifications to the wiring required) or refurbishing the orignals. I have no idea how much a refurb would cost, have a call into a local for estimate. I am torn between the fact that the originals were expensive and more adjustable, and the reduced weight and complexity of the replacements. What say you?

POST 2Original post

Start with getting the quote. That might push you one way or the other right there. I would stay original as your VIN will state power seats with Porsche crest.

POST 3Original post

Take the covers off the new seats and put them on the old seats.

POST 4Original post

Hey Boom... how about posting some pictures to help us help you. :-)

POST 5Original post

Just for reference. I had a piece of my driver side bolster professionally replaced recently. That piece was 8 inches by 22 inches (or something close) and the total job was $475. Ouch. The piece of leather by itself was about $200.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's a pic of the damage to the stitching, the rest of the seat needs some TLC, but it's not too bad. I am bringing the seat to the local ace for an estimate for repair of the stitching. The middle shot is the car with the replacement seat in place, as you can see I am also going to paint all the plastic that is looking ratty.

POST 7Original post

Restitching that piece shouldn't be too costly.

POST 8Original post

Damage doesn't look overly extensive, seeming that you've got it out of the car already get some quotes.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am bringing it in tomorrow, it should be an easy fix, for not too much $$$. I look forward to learning the craft of leather restoration this winter. Anyone need a pair of really nice manual heated seats? I also have the batwing switches to go with them.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, the upholsterer guy looked at the seat today and delivered bad news. The tear is not on the seam, it is actually a split in the leather. He said a repair would not look a heck of a lot better than the rip. He would not charge much to exchange the covers on the better seats with these, but I would be losing the crest, as the better ones are plain. So.... it's in with the replacement non-power seats. Thanks for all the suggestions, you guys are great!

POST 11Original post

Can he transplant the crest onto the new seats?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@ditto, yes he could, but I don't think the cost is truly worth it. I have decided to simply replace the seats with the newer ones and store the originals.
