Instead I've hammered it basically as hard as I can (with a copper plug), used a universal puller, and cursed at it profusely.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I pulled out the front drive shaft from my 2001 C4 to replace a torn boot. The removal was smooth and was fairly easy. I figured I was basically done once I had it in a vice and started cleaning things up. Then I tried to remove the inner joint I've removed the metal cap, the boot, and most importantly the c-clip. I thought I'd just give the joint a few taps with a hammer and it would pop out. Instead I've hammered it basically as hard as I can (with a copper plug), used a universal puller, and cursed at it profusely. It seriously hasn't moved a millimeter. I could put the c-clip right back into the groove. Any suggestions? I'm not missing a second clip or anything I? I'm getting close to just ordering a new shaft so I can have my car back on the road. I'm riding my bike to work tomorrow. What am I, twelve? Thanks, Shawn

POST 2Original post

I've never done a 996 one... but on my 944, hitting the thing with a hammer pops it off the spline. Just to make sure, you're not banging on the part that's in the vice? I've been known to bang on the wrong part after a long day...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haha, thanks for the sanity check. I'm definitely hammering the joint and not the shaft that's in the vise. I going to see if a shop can press it off this afternoon.

POST 4Original post

I f you've got one side off I've seen people knock a stubborn one off with a metal pipe (just larger than the shaft) over the shaft as a slide hammer...
