I'd actually prefer to buy a car with the original IMSB and then I'd have the Solution installed - good for the rest of the engine's life.

Boy, I really like that wing, it changes the looks of the car completely.

I highly recommend replacing an OEM single row (02-04 models) bearing because their failure rates are the highest among IMS bearings reviewed in the class action lawsuit (~8%).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone, happy Friday!
first off, I won't always be this needy, I promise.
so I think I have found the ONE! I had a rennfax done on it (thanks Scott) and everything seems kosher on it. I will get a PPI completed on it as well, but the question I have is.... it has not had the IMSB completed. So would this scare you away if everything else on the car is near perfect? File folder full of service/maintenance records. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance! Here is what the rennfax came up with:
"Brandon,
as promised, here are my impressions of the 2002 Cabrio
in red, the car is very appealing, even in a dark storage facility (this limited my time and what I could see)
temperature controlled, around 50 degrees and there were 5 other Porsches there
Owner stated he has stored the car the last 5 years
Car was covered on our arrival, non Porsche equipment cover (at least it was covered)
and on a C-Tek battery tender hook up via the frunk being unlatched
cover included in sale
owner does not have the hardtop, not uncommon
Tire are newer Sumis from Tire Rack and should be good for two years
Bargain tire that performs very well from new, then become very loud as they harden up (I had a set)
the MY02 wheels were slightly dirty and on only one small incident (1/8) of curb rash on the right
rear
easy enough wheel to repair / repaint, when it becoms that time
Cabrio is nearly flawless, nomarks anywhere and a very deep black
Interior as was I expected for a 60,894 mile car, normal wrinkling on drivers bolster
the painted hardback seats were in excellent condition, I got a good look at the drivers side
after market audio and sub box, I think the original rear seats are still installed and the original subs
are still there..no discussion of the head unit
no smoke or ticking on start up..video here

The car is typical of a Chicago owned 911, second car, driven on weekends, stored winters
Probably overmantained and under driven
Owner is pretty straight up, bought a bass boat and just doesnt use the car enough anymore
this and he golfs a lot
as I stated in our phone call, I think the car is worthy of a PPI
personally , if I could get on a lift and look under, Id probably be ok with buying it without one..but thats me
early in the meeting he asked me to explain the whole IMSB situation, I honestly think hes not up the situation
the owner texted me after I left and asked how much IMSB service was and I and I told him north of 2k
at an uncertified dealer/indy
Id try and meet with him when comes to Vegas, ask him to bring the service records for review
buy him a drink and appetizer
I dont think you can steal this car from him, hes not in a rush, prepared to store it all winter
not pressed for cash (maybe hell drop a ton in Vegas and need to sell !!lolz)
I suspect the bumper and maybe both fenders were painted at some point, likely just a freshen up
CarFax needed here..more on this after I compare observations on my own car
For Chicago PPIs you could try
Fischer Motors / Lake Barrington / Rick Fischer
[phone removed]
Midwest Eurosport / Bensenville, IL /
[phone removed]
Perfect Power / Buffalo Grove. high end shop ..avoid, the owner despises water cooled Porsches and is
pretty vocal about it
more shops available on request,
Fischer Motors
I had then do my coilovers/alignment/ and tire install this spring
modern facility, exist to support the race team, on time/budget and no surprises
good experiences here by myself and RLer clubracer6 (sold me my car)
should you require anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me"
If there are all the right records, and she was driven/cared for as she was intended to be I certainly would not be scared away without the IMSB done. One thing that was not mentioned is how was it driven, if you can get a sense of it from the current owner? Regular timely frequent oil changes seem to be the ticket when it comes to the IMSB issue. It all depends on your paranoid level and what you can deal with, when you do the clutch just plan on doing either "the solution" or replacing it then.
Of course this is all IMHO....
I would consider it a plus that the car has 60K miles on it and has not needed the IMSB replaced. I would then plan to have it replaced soon after purchase and never worry about it again.
I bought my car with 55K, and KNEW going into it that the IMS will need to be done. I rather take it and have it done by a reputable shop, than trusting the word of a seller.
That cold startup sounds fantastic!
Well, that red on black sure is pretty! Can't blame you preferring that over my bland silver car.
What's the deal with the wing? Is that stock? A factory option? I'm assuming it is fixed and doesn't move like the flip up spoiler on mine? Makes the car look more racy.
Brandon, can you post more photos of the car?
A few others and I were talking about this in a separate thread linked below. It's a good sign that the car is running well on original IMSb for a few reasons.. It suggests fairly strongly that your stock intermediate shaft doesn't have gross tolerance issues and that your engine wasn't lugged around with full throttle at 2,000 rpms (keep your revs up in your Carrera!). I highly recommend replacing an OEM single row (02-04 models) bearing because their failure rates are the highest among IMS bearings reviewed in the class action lawsuit (~8%).
While it's a nice bonus in some respects to have the original, the main drawback is that you'll have to pay for any work you wish to do.

Depending on how long you're going to own the car it should guide how you manage the IMS maintenance.
Long time? Consider IMS solution, I had mine done for $3.5k & used that labor to refresh all the peripherals that were in need of replacement. Ended up with refreshed engine peripherals for very little cost above the imss install (AOS, fittings, cooler line, etc.).
That red car looks & sounds great. GL

I saw this car yesterday and my review is above (with typo's in an email I sent to Brandon)
couldn't get better pictures, the area was lit by two bulbs and the car had been 'dolly moved'
up against another
how stupid of me to leave my camera bag and flashlight in the garage... I was certain I'd put them in the truck
aftermarket Misha wing, painted and professionally installed, seller did not have the records with him
as pasted above, the car really moved me, Guards Red is very intoxicating
no signs of any neglect, his mechanic had the number 8.75 written on the cap, for US Qts
all the option codes seem to check, HawkFan has that pic and can post it at will
my concern was the cold start and any excessive smoke or ticking..neither were evident
I wouldd get carfax, then have a complete inspection done, if he has records of the selling dealer, or dealer where he had most work done, I would call them and get them to look at the service records and the warrantee records
Thanks for posting the link. Looks like a very nice car. Boy, I really like that wing, it changes the looks of the car completely. I'm going to have to look into get one of those for mine (seeing how Brandon is probably going to buy this car instead of mine!
).
Whoever speaks with the owner...ask him where he got his fender crest stickers....PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
If they are great quality I'd like to know. Been looking for some.
No hi jack intended.
A beautiful cabrio, and looks like it was well taken care of. I'd actually prefer to buy a car with the original IMSB and then I'd have the Solution installed - good for the rest of the engine's life. I think he's asking a fair price, and that it's worth a drive and PPI.
I have reached an agreed price on the red one from Illinois. The owner will take it for a PPI on Thursday (coincidentally enough he flies in to Vegas for a few days today). I am working out shipping details hopefully for Friday (PPI contingent).
I really like Sporks car, however the red is just catching my eye and won't let it go. If this one falls through, I will definitely have to buy Sporks (if he still lets me. He has been great in giving me all the info asked on his car). I did see the red one you mentioned as well with the really low miles. But for the price, I like what the owner has done with the one I am close to buying.
Spoke has a super nice Cabriolet with the upgraded aero front bumper and side skirts. All he needs to do is fine some turbo twist wheels and duck tail and it will be complete. I kinda hate it if he sells his car, because he'll be missed here on RL. (sniffle) Hopefully we'll convince him to buy another 996 and stay in the family!
Thanks for the kind words.
If the cab sells then I will be looking for a coupe.
As it looks, Hawk will be getting the red car so I'll be keeping mine and changing my outlook at bit. I would like to have a coupe so I've had my car up for sale and haven't been driving it and sort of been regarding it as no longer mine.
By the end of this week I'll know for certain if it will stay with me or not and if it does, I will focus more attention to it. As you said, some sort of wing/duck tail, different wheels and maybe do something with the color (full or partial wrap?). It has pretty much all the other mods I'd like (exhaust, shifter, Brembo's etc).
I am actually really looking forward to getting it out again and putting some spirited miles on her. We have a lot of incredible roads around here and it has finally cooled off enough to drive with the top down.
