Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Jake Raby here is probably the foremost expert on these engines.
Leading evidence: 'foremost expert' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'foremost expert' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ....silly goose you' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

What bearing issue....that's an old conspiracy theory, like man made climate change....silly goose you.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Looking to purchase a 996 and have heard of the Bearing issues. Can some one direct me to the threads that explain what it is. Also is their something you can do to prevent it from occurring? Can you replace before at a reasonable cost? Please excuse my rookie questions, but want to make a good choice as to what to consider
Thanks!

New here ain't cha.
Lots to read.

And here:

and click around. The link above is to a Boxster engine article. The intermediate shaft bearing (IMSB) failure is shared between the Boxster and 996 engines.
For which "solution" is best you'll have to do your research. What's a reasonable cost to have whatever solution you choose fitted is only something you can decide once you have an estimate.
I'm new here too and this is good advice. Some engines will never need the bearing replaced. Replacing it could also be a waste of money for certain engines. Jake Raby here is probably the foremost expert on these engines. Search his posts.
