Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone know where this foam is coming from? I cleaned it out today and it was super brittle. Let's see if more shows up. Any ideas? Know how to stop if it keeps coming out?

POST 2Original post

POST 4Original post

Each joint in the plastic ducts has a foam band on it to help seal the joints. As the foam ages it will shrink and tear free in bits and pieces. Any work that requires dismantling the ducts simply accelerates the process.

POST 5Original post

Here is a helpful hint - search this forum for foam and vents. There literally are hundreds of threads on this same issue. Our cars are approaching 20 years old, and foam, rubber pieces, and all sorts of things are going to deteriorate and wear out.

POST 6Original post

You will probably want to live with it once you found the procedure..

POST 7Original post

Foam goes weird after around 20 years, it either goes brittle and crumbles or shrinks and turns into sticky goo.

POST 8Original post

Welcome to the "What the hell is this stuff?" club. As a 996 ages it begins to slough off bits of itself.

POST 9Original post

Collect it and store it in a jar so when you sell you can say it comes with original ac foam.

POST 10Original post

Its actually valuable stuff. Its called "Porsche phlegm". It can be used for various incantations and spells, if you know how. But dont sprinkle it on an air-cooled Porsche, as it will cause the intermediate shaft bearings to fail.

POST 11Original post

if we could find a way to turn it into electricity, we could solve the world's energy crisis. The foam comes from a never-ending well and will continue to shoot out in large chunks year after year

POST 12Original post

Most of the foam in the vents comes from the evaporator box heater control flap. It's a stamped metal piece with holes punched into it, covered in foam. The foam delaminates and shows up in the vents. The defrost, center, floor vent flaps are similar.
