But there are still some things that aren't exactly trivial -- although they've been proven to work -- like using a Mustang master cylinder and hydroboost to run the brakes.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not a big fan of V8 swaps into anything to be honest. My old FD RX-7 was a prime candidate for a V8 swap because the rotaries only lasted about 30-40k miles and I still opted for a remanufactured stock engine rather than messing with it. Plus I can't imagine there is a great market for frankensteined 911s with questionable modifications required to cram a V8 in.
I agree ... it got pretty scary when he started talking about the amount of cutting necessary to shoehorn the LS into place, plus the need for an access panel.
There was some discussion on the 944 forum about the value of a LS swapped 944, and I think the consensus was "parts value unless you know and trust the builder." And that's in a car where the LS actually fits without significant structural modification. But there are still some things that aren't exactly trivial -- although they've been proven to work -- like using a Mustang master cylinder and hydroboost to run the brakes.
I guess if you have a roller 951 or 968, the LS swap might work out pretty well. A 996? Not so much.
I don't watch this guy's stuff. I think he is a dork. However, I am concerned that if the 911 ever gets completed and he drives it other than in a straight line he is going to bite the big one. I hope not for his sake. Not sure he is talented enough to keep this from going all wrong in some corner.
As far as market goes, here's an indicator. $26K, and reserve not met:

Although, I bet if Hoovie could get 26K for his when he is done he would be pretty happy.
wow. 26k? I'm surprised. In fact I have a hard time believing it. I suspect the seller may have had a friend padding the bidding to try to push it to the reserve. I have a hard time believing anyone is willing to pay that much for a 996 chassis with 150k+ miles and a v8 swap.
I enjoy watching hoovies videos. i think they are entertaining. I was however considering doing an LS swap in my 996 a month ago when i was having repeat issues that i couldnt seem to fix. hoovie and his experience thus far have made me think twice though.
The good news is now the car sans mufflers is about as obnoxious and useful as the owner.
And now with all the chassis cutting do you get a v8 in your spine if you get the typical highway rear ender 4 car pile up?
Yea, I agree with the sound. Totally uncharacteristic for this type of car, but I guess that's the whole point. It's not the same and not meant to be. But it would seem, cutting the car to make the engine fit would greatly diminish the structural integrity of the car and potentially make it more dangerous to drive. And, with all the electro ECU voodoo you have to do to make it work, it's seems to be unpractical from a money standpoint. I hope Hoovie posts the itemized list of parts and labor that went into this endeavor.
The M96 in my Boxster was secured to the chassis with braided steel cable; I assume this is true with the 996 as well, but I haven't spotted it. Presumably, this is because getting crushed by an engine that suddenly decides to join you in the cabin is a bad thing. If it works for the M96, I assume it can work for other engines as well.
What are the modifications Hoovie made that rendered the car unsafe to drive? Or is this just all unchecked speculation about it "maybe" being unsafe to drive?
He's a goof. But what he said about the swap is what I have been saying all along. The complications of marrying the technologies of each outweighs the reliability benefits of the LS. Plus all the structural mods. If you want an LS buy a Chevy. Nowhere, on any planet will a Chevy lump make a Porsche a better car. Period.

This cost a lot more than expected.
For the record, he could've gone this route -

But I'm sure he'll have more hits on his site based on the LS swap.....I know I was curious.
I've never met Hoovie, but I know he's from not too far from here. The 745i update was shot in KC. God, his Hooptie fleet video is a shadowy reflection of my own stable.
I've done the LS swap and it is a ton of fun. Honestly, you're going to need a 2WD 996TT with mods to mirror the LS swap's fun factor.
Structural vs. sheet metal: sheet metal is cut out and not a whole lot of sheet metal is removed.
Reliability: my home built swap was my daily driver for thousands of miles. The guy I sold it to never had reliability issues (obviously this is dependent on how well the car is built.) The GM ECU runs the engine and the Porsche computer runs the chassis. Porsche has two in the car, so it's not a big deal getting the two to work together.
That silver car looks like a nice build and is documented on LS1tech. My LS 996 sold for more than double what I bought it for (retail.)
Ouch! Well, that explains it then. But that's not White Out's fault of course. Based on your "tree" comment, sounds like he was driving it too fast and lost control? Seems like I remember hearing a story about that here on RL with a LS swap that wrecked.
Was he a pilot or something like that?
I experienced the same kind of thing with one of my Tahoes. Sold it to a young lady that had never owned a Tahoe or any type of large SUV. She bought it and one week later she lost control, over corrected, and rolled it. The Tahoe was squashed. My father-in-law heard she made it, but I wasn't able to confirm that information. The Tahoe wasn't jacked up or a 4x4 version. It was just the standard RWD Tahoe LT, but still, a huge difference in driving dynamics that she didn't realize when she bought it.
Ditto! Let's hope he doesn't do something stupid just to get a laugh. He tends to be comically unhinged to say the least. hahaha But entertaining still.
My car weighed 2800lbs, 350hp/350tq, on coilovers and turbo wheels. So it handled really nicely and while the power delivery was the exact opposite of the M96, the powerband and wide footprint/weight distribution kept the car planted. I never worried about it stepping out when I didn't want it to.
Here's a video of the last owner tossing it around:
You Tube
I kept in constant contact with him and he never had an issue with the car and kept modding the engine (he had the car for nearly two years). Car was my DD, took it on many long road trips, let friends drive it, etc. Zero issues (once I figured out how to set up the car.)
Don't know the speed, but it was enough to tear the car apart like a tin can.

Its done with a cost recap and thoughts.
My thoughts: He paid 9k for the car I would love to see this 911 turbo for 26k. Around here you can get a high mile automatic for low 30s.
Without paying for labor thats roughly 15k for the swap. Still something to consider if your motor goes and you have more free time than you know what to do with.
