First thing I did, replaced the battery in the key fob, car still won't unlock.

I've replaced the microswitches on mine, but I don't think that actually helps reception.

You check your oil pressure as often as you check your mirrors.

The "Oh, you disconnected your battery with less than half a tank?
On my car and what the manuals says, after so many days of non use and the key fob does not unlock the car, use the key to unlock the car but do not open the door, your key fob will now work and lock the car and then unlock.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just push the button as I walk and wait for the sound or the light flash to tell me it worked.
A few random observations after 1.5 months of ownership:
Key Fob
Week 1 (new battery) - Works from 25-45 ft
Week 2 - Works from 25-30 ft
Week 3 - Works from 10-15 ft
Week 4 - Works from 2-5 ft, maybe
Week 5 - Works from 2 ft after 2nd try...
Guys in SUV's and 10-year old subcompacts apparently remember you from high school and that time you relieved them of their girlfriend. These guys consistently wait in the middle lane as you approach and cut into the fast lane to cut you off, ride your bumper like they're looking for the mileage on your odometer, and pull up 3-5 ft behind you to your left or right at stoplights.
You check your oil pressure as often as you check your mirrors.
When you notice others do it, you reminisce back to when you used to speed up through traffic to get behind on next to a 911 to get a better, more unobstructed view.
The gas hand drops from 4/4 to 3/4 20 miles after fill up.
Sometimes, depending on the angle, your 911 looks like a 15-year old 996, but most days it looks like the supercar it is.

Definitely the staring and my kid in the backseat waving at people or yelling hello with the top down doesn't help.
Just yesterday a M6 jumped in front of me right before the off ramp but he couldn't pull away from the off ramp... I think he was pretty frustrated lol
No key fob issue.
I def look at oil pressure more than I look at any dash gauge of any car I have owned.
Every other noise sounds like a tick... I enjoy the car so much more when I forget about it.
It probably has something to do with the Aerokit making the car look faster than it really is, or the dark tint that makes them wonder if I'm part of the crime syndicate - but:
* Folks seem no less polite when I drive the 996.
* I do watch the oil pressure gauge, but not like, say, how I watch a nice pair of yoga pants when they walk by.
* As for people noticing the car - yeah. On a couple of occasions, people have stopped traffic to talk about the car, which I don't endorse because it makes us look even more jackhole-ish than we actually are. If this is possible.
Now, granted, the only car I owned when I was in Chicago was a burgundy Ford Tempo...all of my 996 observations are from San Diego, which is a far cry from Chicago.
Best encounter on the road I had was at a stop light next to an OLD rusty Ford pickup jacked up on huge tractor style tires. I glance over to see the 50 something, tatted(from prison), cap covering ratty looking hair, rolled up flannel shirt sleeves, four day beard(not for style), semi-toothless,...etc hanging out his window looking my car over. I'm expecting a huge spray of terbacci juice at any second to be shot across my windshield. As i'm looking up he catches my eye, gives me a big toothless grin and a bigger thumbs up! Can't always judge people by appearances. This ain't Chicago, either!
"Key FOBS". Anywhere from 20 feet to not till 1 foot. Not dependent on battery freshness. I just push the button as I walk and wait for the sound or the light flash to tell me it worked. I have the instructions for the mod just haven't done it yet.
LOL, no, it's more like I start walking away from my car...

And then walk back to my car to lock it.
Super uncool when babes are checking you out.
My keyfob works from about ten feet away. I've rewired the dash so the tachometer is now that oil pressure gauge. I had a truck with two young ladies rear end someone in a parking lot. When I looked up the driver was still looking at my car. I had a teenager at a stoplight politely ask if he could take a picture of the car. I drive far more defensively in the Porsche as I know the one I have would be very very hard to replace and nearly any accident would be a total loss. I often refer to it as a rolling museum.
Funny, when I drive my fake toy...
I have no key fob= no issues
Cars and suv's pull over and let me by as if I have a siren and flashing lights
Just a little ole VW!
I love replica cars. There is a similar one to yours that shows up from time to time at the museum's cars and coffee. Doesn't matter that it's a replica - all our PCA crew loves the car.
And I can drive it without paranoia unlike a real 356. Yes it an attention *****, most people have no cue what it is
1500 lbs with about 140hp makes for a quick and fun ride, my big boy go-kart.
Just to be clear, what is this "mod" you speak of?
I've replaced the microswitches on mine, but I don't think that actually helps reception. It's still pretty bad.
discovery. If you leave the car unattended for let's say a week, come back to the garage, press the key fob for entry...nothing: WTF! First thing I did, replaced the battery in the key fob, car still won't unlock. Now I start to have paranoid visions of calling a tow truck and trying extract the car from the garage.
Next, I called the previous owner of the car, told him of my dilemma. This is the same guy that refuses to send me the second key, causing me to spend $400 to create a back up key. But at least he took my phone call. He told me that this particular model, needs to have its key plugged into the ignition switch, weekly (I know these words will trigger an inappropriate remark, so be it)
, but the key fob isn't working I replied!
The previous owner told me to remove the lock plug from the door, open the door with the key, warning me that the alarm may go off, it didn't) place the key in the ignition, click the key fob and start the car. Voila, it worked and the alarm didn't go on in the process.
I don't know if this process is particular to my car, or to 996 cars in general. Mine is a 2004 GT3 (Poor me).
Now the real question; is this an 1/8th wave antenna serving 288mhz, a quarter wave for 576mhz, or what? Add another 130mm worth of wire and you might get 45 feet.
did you try to unlock the car with the key? My remote doesn't work after 7 days. I just use the key to get into the car and it starts right up. As soon as you turn the key to unlock the door it honks once. In my case the car starts but the central locking then locks the door.
Many times I have come out in the morning, hit the key fob, heard a click, then tried to open the door, only to discover it is locked.
Luckily I live in a decent neighborhood.
I have the same experience as Always with my 996; if I haven't driven her in 5 days or so, the fob won't open the car, so I use the key, reach in and insert it into the ignition switch and all is well and reset. The GT3 doesn't have this particular trait; she is Always happy to see me so no fob quirks.
I also do the click click click as I approach either car, to see when they will, respond.
I also lock them, walk away, then turn around to go back and make sure I really did lock them. I also tend to try at least three parking spots before I find the one I really really like, in what my wife refers to as the Goldilocks Parking Spot Selection System.
On my car and what the manuals says, after so many days of non use and the key fob does not unlock the car, use the key to unlock the car but do not open the door, your key fob will now work and lock the car and then unlock. works all the time.
the best mod I have done is follow the TSB on the antenna wire for key fob, went from 5 ft. to 45 ft. after the mod.
We read, "The GT3 doesn't have this particular trait; she is Always happy to see me so no fob quirks."
My GT3 is kind of a bitch, she has the same 7 to 10 day away pout as many a 996 owner has experienced. Pop off the door lock plug, open the door, insert the key, it starts right up. No mini-horn honk, no alarm. Kind of annoying, but considering the performance and slutty appearance of the car, worth the inconvenience.
