It is a procedure recommended by Jake Raby, and he seems to be incredibly knowledgable and experienced with this stuff.

Suggestion
You need to be extremely careful - especially for sources of static electricity - a static spark could set off quite an explosion...and you'd be covered with flaming liquid Marvel Mystery Oil...not good!!!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have the cam chain tensioners out, and before reinstallation I'd like to service them. This is a new procedure to me.
Jake Raby posted this on another forum: "Sounds like classic tensioners to me.. Pull them out and clean them with some Marvel Mystery oil heated to around 160F... Partially submerge them and pump on the pistons until clean oil appears and then reinstall.. You should be good to go."
I picked up some Marvel Mystery Oil at the hardware store (haven't seen this stuff in years). Any advice for how to safely heat the oil? Open flame seems like a bad idea with oil...
I have a IR thermometer so I should be able to figure out when it is hot enough.
I have new sealing rings and o-rings.
Any other tips on this job?
PS. I still have the crank locked at TDC and the cams locked down.

The flash point is 128F.
Most ultrasonic cleaners should be able to get to that temp. You should probably heat the tensioners before you submerge them.
All in all this sounds like a terrible idea. Please do this outside, with a chemical extinguisher close by.
Thanks for the idea and info. All of our home heating is gas, so that's out, no electric burners in our place. I'll pick up a hotplate for the garage - I haven't seen one of those in years either. I'm sure it will come in handy for other things.
That way, no open flames to worry about. Hopefully set on low in a well ventilated area it will be less of a hazard.
I'm not sure I understand the flash point information. Is this unsafe?
It is a procedure recommended by Jake Raby, and he seems to be incredibly knowledgable and experienced with this stuff.
"Flashpoint" is due to volatile vapors given off by the liquid being heated. These vapors would explode if subjected to an open ignition source (i.e. spark or open flame). As such if the flashpoint is 128F, at 160F you'd be producing lots of volatile vapor. You need to be extremely careful - especially for sources of static electricity - a static spark could set off quite an explosion...and you'd be covered with flaming liquid Marvel Mystery Oil...not good!!! be careful
