I checked the cables and everything seems to be connected properly and working.
Leading evidence: 'Check cables and everything seems' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ...shift linkage and cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I moved the shifter into 1st and checked underneath the car and the connection to the transmission moved all the way back.

I will be checking the linkage and cables to see what I can find.

2,000 miles ago, I had a dealer change the clutch but only recenly have I had this issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone let me know if they have experienced this issue. I have a 2001 Twin Turbo and am experiencing an issue with 1st gear engaging. This will typically happen when going from reverse to 1st. I shift into what feels like 1st gear, but when I let out the clutch, the gears grind. I have to move the shifter down into second and reengage first or hold it/force it up into first gear to get it to go into/stay in 1st gear. All other gears are fine and once I am rolling, downshifting to first is not an issue.
Could the shifter cable need adjusting? Or possibly something on the transmission? I would appreciate any help or advice on what to look for.
Thanks
Yes, it seems to happen when I double clutch also. It feels like the shifter is not completing the shift into 1st. But 1st is the only gear it happens in. If I go from reverse to 2nd or 3rd, thoings seems to engaged as they should.
This is typical of cars without pictures posted on RL
awe - seriously, if this just started happening and the dealer was in there, have them take a look and see if something is up with it... maybe they will cover it if it is an install issue with thier previous work. Jamming it into gear seems like a bad idea because it is....
the only suggestion I have is when coming out of reverse, FULL STOP - briefly hit any gear other than 1st, THEN go for first.... sometimes this gets things lined up better.... I have always done that on every car.... its an easy habbit to get into.
Also before hitting reverse - FULL STOP, hit any other gear, then reverse... it really reduces the grind into gear issues that some cars have (non P-cars)
New info. I checked the cables and everything seems to be connected properly and working. I moved the shifter into 1st and checked underneath the car and the connection to the transmission moved all the way back. I moved the shifter into 2nd gear and again, the transmission lever moved all the way forward. The real issue I have is "POPPING OUT OF 1ST GEAR" as I let out the clutch, not getting it into gear. In fact, if I have it in first gear and let the car roll backwards by pushing in the clutch, the gear shift will pop out of 1st all by itself as it begins to roll backward. Dead stop is better but still an issue...rolling forward, no issue "yet". If I put pressure on the shift lever and then let out the clutch, it will typically stay, but I can feel the pressure to try and pop out. Does this sound like a shifter problem or trans problem? Thanks
Sounds like a bad gear or syncro. There is supposed to be a place that started "fixing" the syncros but you have to remove the shaft and mail it to them. IIRC they are welded on.
Anyone confirm - or am I off base on this info (it was not something o concentrated on as there were shiny things around while it was being discussed
