I have just bought a 996 911 3.4 tiptronic with a good service history etc, checked it over best I could and as have had 2 x 986 boxtsers and I thought I had checked enough to have found a good one.

There was no smoking, it did lose a little oil on the way home on a two hour drive but was running correctly with 1.5 pressure on the oil pressure gauge.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I have 03 3.6L C2 cabrio, I went for a drive and parked at a mall and noticed it was dripping a few drops of coolant. Turned it on and drove it right back home (15 min drive). Turned it off in the drive way and it leaked a lot of coolant, as if it overheated. In reality it didn't overheat, because after it cooled off, added coolant while it was off, and all the coolant I added, was leaking immediately. I can't tell from where it is leaking, does anyone have a clue to where it might be leaking from? I cant turn it on and drive it to my mechanic, and I don't want to put it on a tow truck. Could this be something I could fix at home?

POST 2Original post

if you cant tell where the coolant is leaking from most likely fixing it at home yourself will probably not be the best idea?

POST 3Original post

Cracked coolant tank? Bad water pump?? Broken hose??? Is it left rear? Right front? Middle underneath? Inside passenger side?? Give us a clue.

POST 4Original post

Some details from you would help. Is the coolant pool at the front or rear of the car? Maybe some pix too. Some leaks are easy to fix, some are not and if you can't locate the leak you won't be able to fix it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The first image (big coolant puddle) is when I turned off the car initially ( you can also see the level of coolant in the reservoir, that's where it stayed at), the second is when I added coolant (while it was off).

POST 6Original post

That looks like a water pump to me, hopefully you didn't loose any of the impeller arms while you drove it back home.

POST 7Original post

I'm going with coolant tank. But regardless get the car flat bedded to a Porsche shop and get the leak diagnosed and fixed. With that severe of a leak there should be no problem determining where the leaking fluid is coming from.

POST 8Original post

Consider getting one of these. Yours is not stock and may not be the correct pressure. Notice the part number ends in 04. If there is a later revision it would probably end in 05 or>...

POST 9Original post

Good eye Frank. The coolent doesnt look right eigther, should be pink.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alright I will get a new cap, but why does the coolant have to be pink? Im not really familiar with Porsches, this is the 1st one and it hasn't given me any trouble until now. The car is in the Middle east, and I don't drive it unless its sunny and warm. And mostly in the summer where the temperature is always 35C (95F) and above. Its originally a Canadian car, could that be the reason that something went wrong with the cooling system? Are there any modifications I should do to prevent this from happening again?

The coolant doesn't necessarily have to be PINK. There are different formulations of coolant. Some are not very compatible with each other. Porsche original fill is an Organic Acid Technology, OAT, type that is typically pink or yellow. Porsche uses the pink. To be safe most folks stick with the Porsche pink. That said there are some newer green, yellow, blue, orange,... pick a color, coolants that are compatible. But if you are not completely sure of compatibility why gamble? Your car may have had a flush/refill with a different coolant. Currently you appear to have green. If you know what brand/type it is I would be inclined to stay with it now. If you don't know what you have, a complete flush and replace with OAT or one of the new universally compatible coolants would be a safe move.

POST 12Original post

Check the coolant hose that runs from the water pump to the AOS. It is right next to the oil filler tube. The plastic hose connecter is right next to one of the belt pulleys. Probably has broken. Simple fix with a brass nipple and two hose clamps.

I have a similar issue as below, can anyone help me please? I have just bought a 996 911 3.4 tiptronic with a good service history etc, checked it over best I could and as have had 2 x 986 boxtsers and I thought I had checked enough to have found a good one. There was some slight white build up in the oil tube but hardly anything on the cap both when I first looked at the car and when I tested it today and paid, but everyone I spoke to advised that this was quite normal. There was no smoking, it did lose a little oil on the way home on a two hour drive but was running correctly with 1.5 pressure on the oil pressure gauge. However when I got it home this evening I noticed a dropping of liquid onto the exhaust with a hiss/hissing. And when I looked under the car to my dismay water was literally gushing/dumping somewhere in the top back left of the engine bay. There is a large amount of coolant on the floor, there is oil in the coolant and there is oil on the outside of the water expansion tank/cap (I have not opened it as it is too hot but I can only guess that it is full of oil). This was all happening with the engine off as in water pushing its way out. I am gutted, and fear the worse as in head gasket, cracked head, but some people have said on forums if there is water on the floor even with oil in it there can be other causes like oil air separator, pipes and or oil/water cooler. I will try to get it to my garage early in the week, and have emailed the garage I bought it from but I would be grateful if someone could offer me some advice please. Some pictures attached.

Sure does look to be the center of the car, driver's side under the engine... I'd buy a new water pump & replace it if a close-up look reveals it's leaking. Haven't done mine yet but it's relatively straightforward as far as repairs go. Good luck.
