Apparently it had been years since replacement, so I got my first unexpected repair...$200 at Autozone.

IMS is important, but AOS is equally important to change every three years (see the intermix threads for details.).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I submitted my first post last fall after the Porsche bug hit me hard. I had just taken a test drive in a grey C4S and fell in love with the car. I passed on it as it had a number of issues, but began a very active search for my C4S (even briefly flirting with aero C2's). Over the next 6 months I searched high and low for a seemingly non-existent vehicle: AWD, sport seats, 6 speed, full records, OEM parts, within my price range?? Whenever I found a vehicle, it fit most of my criteria, but not everything. Rather than jump on a car I really liked, many of you urged me to remain patient and wait for a car I loved.
So the search continued. SearchTempest everyday, RL classifieds, AutoTrader, dealership searches, ebay. I knew every car that came on the market...and quantified their attributes. I built a detailed financial model to rank each car I came across (original model was from a fellow RL member), taking into account mileage, year, C2/C4S, IMS upgrade, price, mods... Then one day, after feeling like I was resigned to driving my old 4Runner for eternity, I found a post right here in the RL classifieds. 2002 Carrera 4S, grey on black, sport seats, full leather, 3 keys, sport techno wheels, 6 speed, owned by a fanatic. All conversations with the owner were great and I finally felt confident in an owner and car to put down a deposit and send it for a PPI. Needless to say, the car passed with flying colors.
So I sit here typing this on my final night as a non-Porsche owner. The car is fresh off surgery for an LNE IMS upgrade and a flight to Washington is the only thing between me and years of dreaming. Then 2,000 miles back to Chicago to get acquainted with my new daily driver...
So thank you all so much for your experience, guidance and support. It's been quite the journey so far and I look forward to taking the next step.

Made me do a double-take. Saw the thread title plus read your thread about the adapter with IMS kit, figured you have been a Porsche owner already
NTL, CONGRATS and have a safe and fun trip home
Awesome! Congratulations! Great job on holding out until you got the right one! From someone who has jumped on a "deal" too many times and gotten burned I can tell you that your diligence will pay off.
IMS is important, but AOS is equally important to change every three years (see the intermix threads for details.). Water pump and RMS are the other culprits. Baby her with maintenance but drive her like a race car and you will be greatly rewarded. These are amazingly fun cars.
Congrats! I thought that car was gorgeous, definitely a uniquely ordered C4S.
I ended up giving up on my C4S-or-bust mentality last month when I came across a pretty, low-mileage C4 way under my target budget. But along the way, I built a running spreadsheet of every C4S for sale in the US, with detailed option lists and price vs mileage charts. So I definitely understand your journey!
Enjoy the Tri-Cities when you go to pick it up
Water pump and AOS every 3 years (regardless of mileage), IMS retrofit every 5 years or 75k, engine oil 6 months or 5K (dt40 or xp9) is what was recommended to me.
Just type in intermix for this forum and go read the threads. The AOS is cheaper to replace than the IMS but just as much of an engine killer.
Awesome!
And yes, I totally am also in that spreadsheet phase on my own search. Fingers crossed this one 99 C2 is passing the PPI, I am ready for the search to be over.
Enjoy the car! And the drive home sounds fantastic! Rocky Mountains!
Congrats.
Now make sure you watch out for mud slides, forest fires, floods, tornadoes, hail, deer among other things you can encounter driving her back.
Check the air in your spare too.
Had a wonderful drive back and got to know the car well. Bought the car from another Rennlister and not only was it an easy transaction, but Phil was a wealth of knowledge and an overall great guy. The car looked better in person than I imagined and is in incredible shape. It didn't hit me that I owned the car when I pulled away and I had to stop after about a mile to get out of the car and jump up and down (girlfriend took a photo and told me I didn't stop smiling for hours).
Spent Friday night in Boise and had some gorgeous views while driving through Oregon. Spent Saturday zipping through Idaho, Utah and Colorado on our way to Denver. Temps dropped significantly in Colorado and the car did wonderfully on icy roads...can't wait to see how it performs in winter. Brother lives in Boulder and took him out early Sunday morning for a little ride up Coal Creek road. Stopped at the top and he asked if everything was ok as I got out of the car. Flipped him the keys and told him it's his turn and watched the same wild grin take over his face. Think I was able to pass on the Porsche bug to him in just a couple miles of driving. Long solo trek back to Chicago, but the car was amazing. Threw it into cruise control and was getting a readout that I was averaging 31 mpg...is that possible??
Anyways I took the car to work on Monday and when I got in Monday afternoon, the battery died on me. Apparently it had been years since replacement, so I got my first unexpected repair...$200 at Autozone. Other than that, it's a wonderful car, great handling, plenty of available power. My only 2 complaints are the exhaust should be a little throatier and louder. The second is that the low beams are just not that powerful. I felt a lot more comfortable with fogs on as well, but even then, my visibility was mediocre. High beams are more than capable, but obviously not acceptable to drive with them on all the time. I'll be looking into fixing both of those things.
Attached a couple of pictures from the trip. A heck of a way to break in the new-to-me Carrera.
congrats! glad your drive went well.
**as far as your battery, if it continues to drain and is related to some sort of short, there is an issue sometimes with the front trunk switch.
PO of my 2002 C4S had this issue just a few months ago and our mileage is about the same - simple replacement solves the problem.
Congrats on a great looking car from someone who went through the EXACT same process of the long frustrating hunt! Looks like your car might need engine mounts replaced too, gap between body and exhaust tip.
Congrats! I did the opposite and bought a 996 for $8k less than the others for sale and have been treating it as a "project" car. However with getting married in 2 1/2 weeks I'm wishing I would have gone your route lol... Having my car in the shop every 4 weeks is getting old
Great looking car!
First congrats a beautiful car
For your two issues I have the following suggestions:
Exhaust - Assuming you have PSE, check to make sure the flaps are not frozen in the closed position as mine were. You can remove the rear bumper/heat shields and check the operation. Its a pretty simple job. If they are working correctly it should be plenty loud.
Also you may want to to the diode mod for the relay. Plenty of how to's on here
Headlights - OEM low beams are pretty weak. I've upgraded to 55W HID units and its a big improvement. You may want to check out The Retro Fit Source for some options
