Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, So my new to me 2003 996TT with 62k miles is making a weird noise. its a cross between a high pitch hum, a weed-whacker, and a cicada. Heres the breakdown Only noticeable with windows down and driving next to something like a wall to reflect the noise Had front 2 wheel bearing replaced thinking that was the issue, rears have been checked and are fine Does not modulate with engine RPM Occurs even while coasting down a hill in neutral You cannot hear it inside the car while stopped but if you get out I think you can hear it coming from the rear Brakes do not seem to modulate the noise The car does have headers and an unknown aftermarket exhaust, a vflow intake box, and a GIAC tune. The first clip was taken while coasting down a hill in neutral, the wind noise is annoying but from 28-31 seconds you can really hear the noise, its sounds like a breeze blowing but thats really just whatever this noise is. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tlm8ej7ela..._0003.mp4?dl=0 The second clip I took while idling, it seems like its the same noise perhaps? Again at the end of the video you get a good listen to it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ekh8hqy2e4..._0004.mp4?dl=0 Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

The sound quality is horrible but it could be one of your catalytic converters (sounded like a rattle to me). But it's tough to hear the noise over the turbos so you might want to try the 996TT forum. Their ears can hear past the whine a little more naturally then us NA guys.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The more I hear it I think it may be a pulley, it seems to vary very very slightly with engine RPM.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spoiler alert - its the front diff bearings. This will not be cheap...
