Some people with over 500 HP are running the OBX diff without issues.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased a 996 and am trying to price out a transmission rebuild and adding a lsd. Guard didn't have prices listed and most other sites don't have info for installation ect. Are there ballpark figures that might get me close? I will drop the transmission but that's about where my confidence in transmissions ends.
Thanks for the help
Is the tranny toast ?
Are you sure you want a plated diff , because a wave track geared diff is a lot cheaper , like 1500 . A clutch plated diff is 2-3 times that .
Lots of stuff going on with this post.
1. 996 ... C2, C4, C4S, TT? Need more information.
2. Is your trans done or not? That can get expensive if its needed but its not the end of the world. Rebuilds are expensive, much more than buying a used low mileage and replacing. Few shops with the know how and less with the ability in Seattle.
3. LSD vs TBD - WaveTrac & Quaife are TBDs (Torque Biasing Differentials), not LSDs. Guard & OS Giken are actual LSDs that assist under hard braking and assist in wheel spin out of turns. You will not "need" these for the street but they are useful for the track. TBDs are one way, acceleration only which is more useful if you autocross. If this is a street only car, regardless of model you will not "need" to buy any of these options (TBD or LSD) but it is a relatively easy upgrade when the trans is out with the right technician.
Thanks for the help guys. It's a 2000 c2. Tranny is in working order, but higher mileage and the car will be 90% track driven so I am looking to rebuild and possibly regear while adding a track oriented LSD while I'm at it.
Or you can take this route which is much cheaper and works well.
Buy this LSD (TBD) for $550

Add these reinforced Bolts and washers for $34 for the LSD so it wont fail and you have a reliable LSD (TBD) that can handle 400 hp.

Spend a total of $584 plus instalation on a proven set up thats worked on many cars with much more HP than a 996 Carrera and you have yourself an affordable solution.
Lower gearing is the best move you can make. Huge difference!!
And with the rebuild, you should get much easier, more precise shifting - that's a really big difference on track as well.
But it can get spendy... like thousands...
I wouldn't install a cheap plated diff like the obx in your car
With a clutch based diff , in a track day situation it can wear very quickly .
Even the stock Porsche factory LSD with its brass plates and soft clutches can be worn out after a couple of track days .
I bought a factory LSD diff on eBay and had it upgraded with guard internals .
Guard transmission also make a complete LSD that really is the best available .
IMO either have them rebuild a factory diff or buy one of theirs .
If cash is an issue , a geared torque sensing diff is a fantastic option , buckets of grip and no clutches to burn out .
Unfortunately you don't get any deceleration benefit with one but it's still better than hitting the track with the standard open diff .
So if you have the funds and are serious about track performance go with guard .
If not , go with a wave track or quaif diff .
There are a couple good links in this thread showing the diff internals .

Since you are in Seattle , you might be interested to know that we are blessed in Vancouver with many independent Porsche garages ( a side effect to being the number one market for performance cars per capita in North America ) and the Canadian dollar is low , you can save 20-25 % on labour from the exchange rate .
Lots of Washington plates on cars in shops up here . They buy their parts at home and get the work done here
Scan automotive does a lot of LSD work and track prep. They did a fantastic job on my car .

Weissach is another good shop .
Thanks! I will shoot them an email. I was originally thinking a Guard with straight cut gears, but I was told there wasn't an easy way to get straight cut gears inside of a regular c2 box. I am expecting to pay 6-7k, which might be a bit optimistic but that's what Im trying to find out.
I think The OBX is a torque sensing geared diff. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Either way there are allot of people who have successfully gone the OBX route with other higher horsepower cars including track days without issues as long as he bolts and washers are changed.
Here's a thread on the OBX Diff. Some people with over 500 HP are running the OBX diff without issues.

Talk to Gbox in Colorado (
http://www.gboxweb.com
). They are one of the shops with the most expertise on theses transmission. Both my buddy and I had our C4 transmissions rebuilt this year due to pinion bearing noise. A rebuild without major parts is about $4,000. If you need a lot of new parts it adds to this. They also have tremendous experience with racing gearboxes and can probably give you advice on the lsd.
I wanted to report back after talking with a few different shops. It seems like Roger Brown over at
www.californiamotorsports.net
is the man to go to on these set ups. I may end up going with a c4 transmission in the future, but for a c2 rebuild and and LSD questions, he seems like the one to talk to. very helpful via email, and gave me some good advice. I'll be sending my transmission his way over the winter for a rebuild and a LSD.
+1 for California Motorsports
+1 for G Box
I bought a OS Giken LSD (Clutch Type) after talking with both extensively. They're both excellent outfits with a LOT of experience.
Thanks for the follow up. I'll probably see you around at the track with PCA or BMWCCA. The car is a fairly stock bright red c2 aero. Big changes are coming this winter with the referenced transmission rebuild.
