So I got bored with my interior this weekend and decided to spice things up, redid the center console trim pieces in silver suede fabric and installed LED instrument cluster bulbs along with lime green painted needles.

Why do you guys still wanna use the crappy CDR-220's and put a band-aid retrofit on it?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I got bored with my interior this weekend and decided to spice things up, redid the center console trim pieces in silver suede fabric and installed LED instrument cluster bulbs along with lime green painted needles. Let me know what you think. Also since I installed the AUX cable I no longer needed the cd holders so I removed the cartridges and the metal springs inside and now have a second custom storage tray ^_^

POST 2Original post

You realize you just posted your credit card number with expiration dates and all? Time to call the bank. Otherwise, looks spiffy.

POST 3Original post

I really dig the instrument and needle colors!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its not an active card otherwise I wouldnt keep it there but your right I should probably cut it up and toss it

Whoops! The green definitely isn't my preference but it looks like you did a really nice job on your upgrades. Except for the gutted CD holder. It needs more work.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 13285134

I think the new screwdriver holder works well, personally. Keeps your screwdriver handy and right where you need it.

POST 9Original post

Id really dig the suede in black, really nice work

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 13285140, 13285170

Every car needs a screwdriver holder! I have black suede too, it was a tough choice but I like the color match console to the exterior too much Also with the needles I tried to replicate the 918 cluster but you cant recreate perfection

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13285236

I did this on a previous car and used Flourescent marking spray paint. It comes very close. Green gives it a Gemballa style treatment. How come you didn't do the two outer needles? The suede to me is a little 70's **** but as long as you like it is all that matters.

POST 12Original post

noob question: what aux cable did you use? I've been thinking of doing the same, who sues cd's anymore?

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13285284

I was just looking at the CDR-220's on ebay yesterday. I'm almost to the point where I would like an Aux.

Im used to having bluetooth, I need something to at least plus my phone in to play music.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source posts: 13285284, 13285393

Gotta love auto-complete

POST 16Original post

Why do you guys still wanna use the crappy CDR-220's and put a band-aid retrofit on it? Don't really understand that one. Even with upgraded speakers, it still sounds bad IMO. Here's a new offering from Porsche if you haven't seen it yet.

POST 17Original post

Does it come with a free pair of bifocals? I have a sneaky suspicion that entering an address on that thing SUCKS. OP, I personally don't dig the color - but damn, you do good work. I hope the snowflakes on the cluster aren't new - that would suck.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13285501

I don't want a NAV unit, just a way to play music. If you're going to go through all of that trouble, why not install a double din unit?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 13285546

For people that want to keep it period correct and OEMish. Just buy a decent single din aftermarket head. It's not like the 996 is a classic concours car.

POST 20Original post

Ya, after coming out of a 2014 535i Msport that was so nice I would forget I was even driving, I'm trying to keep a "less is more" racing theme. So I'd like a little more functionality but not some cheesy, bright colored, Japanese special. But I'm not paying $300 for for a cdr-220 either so I may just have to start taking my Mobi Cube on road trips.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 13285284, 13285276, 13285520

It was off amazon, forgot the actual name or brand but its like 12$ and plugs directly into the cdr220, it wont work with the 210 so if you want the link just message me I will send it to you The paint I bought was from a hobby lobby, it was a pack of like 6 different colors including the white I really like lime green, I plan to do my calipers in the same color I prefer the suede feel over anything, my old car had black suede Thank you, luckily Ive done this a few times so I wasnt "learning" on the Porsche haha No the snowflakes arent new, is there any way to fix it without buying panels btw??

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also I plan on a double din in the future but I found this cdr220 for $50 in Kentucky after realizing the aux cord I purchased wouldnt fit my cdr210 so I did the "upgrade" for the time being

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 13285687

I still have my 535iX and am lucky to have the Logic7 audio option. For my 996, I got a very subtle Eclipse single din unit. It's understated but has very good features/performance. There's a handful of very discreet single din units out there without breaking the bank if you look. You might want to find a NOS older Blaupunkt or Nakamichi unit if you want it to seemlessly blend in.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 13286137

Make sure it comes with the radio code. Not sure if it's possible to recover it without it or not.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 13286152

The 535i was the nicest all around car I've owned. To me they are the perfect balance and I loved the Idrive interface. But when I was ready to move on after having it for 6 months I knew I had some serious issues. One of my best friends has it now so I still get to ride in it and take it for a spin every once in awhile. Which eclipse model did you go with? I hadn't thought about a blaupunkt. My uncles new '84 (IIRC) Gold Targa came with a blaupunkt. 1st Porsche I ever rode in and eventually got to drive it one time.

POST 29Original post

writeup on the needle mod??

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13286894

I definitely would but to be honest it was sort of a hassle with that part of the modding. The stock Porsche needles come dyed the orange color so they can't to my knowledge be repainted. I couldnt find a source for clear porsche needles so I had to visit the junkyard and find a couple different cars which the right size needles that are repaintable so these were from a few different donors and I cant remember which cars exactly. I honestly ended up being lucky finding the right needles as you not only need the right lenght but also the right diameter for the pin itself. Also the two outer needles I left white because I thought it would look cool 😊

POST 31Original post

You can't paint them? Will the paint not stick to the stock dye?

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13287545

Since the orange wont come off if you added green paint on top the color wouldnt be green if the lights hit it, you need a clear plastic that you can paint onto, some needles come painted with just a strip that you can scrap off and apply your own color. Heres the guide I went by: http://www.cruizers.org/clrneedle.html

POST 33Original post

Nice work on your mods. It is easy to tell that you spent some time there!

POST 34Original post

Not feeling the "sued"or the CD cubby. Could use a tighter woven pattern perhaps. Just my 2cents. Needles are great though!
