Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm pretty sure they've never been cleaned; 17 years of buildup.
Leading evidence: 'Clean ; 17 years of buildup' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean ; 17 years of buildup' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

This new place used a commercial iron release product on the wheel (you can tell because it turns purple on application) and it removed every bit of brake dust in about 30 seconds.

I used Iron-X for the first time a few weeks ago and it seemed to do a pretty good job.
Use meguiar's wheel cleaner and repeat the process

then i use Meguiar's wheel cleaner and repeat the process with the mitt.

This has been the process I've used on previous cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I want to put a coat of wax on my twist wheels. The first step is to get them clean.
There is a buildup of brake dust. Do I need a special cleaner to get the wheel really clean?
Thanks.
Try one of the commercial Wheels cleaners (Meguiars, Eagle, etc. ) As far as embedded brake dust on silver coat, use something mild like rubbing compound, Bar Keeps Friend, etc.
Also look at Griots.com for cleaners/polish/compound though not cheap.

Recommendation:
1. Take off wheel
2. Wash real well with a good car wash soap
3. Use some bug/tar remover to get any tar off the wheels
4. Wash again with car wash soap
5. Dry real well
6. Use a claybar
7. Finally comes the coat of wax, put on at least two coats
8. Clean the wheel well
9. Put wheel back on car, repeat for the other three
This has been the process I've used on previous cars. My original question boils down to: is car wash soap and bug/tar remover sufficient to get rid of all the brake dust?
Use Sonex or Iron-x that has an iron deposit remover. This is the best way to remove embedded brake dust because it pulls it out of the paint. All the iron remover products turn purple when they come in contact with iron particles. Do this before using a clay bar.
Sonex will still take a little while to get clean, but when you are done, the wheels will be fully cleaned.
I just went went to a new car wash place in our DD Audi and it had heavily caked on brake dust because our regular car wash was closed for a long time for renovations. This new place used a commercial iron release product on the wheel (you can tell because it turns purple on application) and it removed every bit of brake dust in about 30 seconds. Sonex is not as strong as that, but it will get the job done more completely than cleaners that don't have iron removers in my experience.
You don't know unless you try. If your wheels have always been well maintained then sure, a soap and agitation should be enough. 99% of the wheels I see I just go straight for a dedicated wheel cleaner. If you have stubborn spots after that then clay or polish on a microfiber. If you still have super tough yellow spots you can very gently go over it with 0000 steel wool and then follow it up with a little polish. This is a last resort. On a bunch of the 996s I've done, including my own the wheel faces clean up easily with a product like Iron X or Optimum Ferrex.
I used Iron-X for the first time a few weeks ago and it seemed to do a pretty good job.
I also use
LA's Totally Awesome

And after:
Indeed, I've been doing Opti-Coat now for the last 6 months so I've been buying more Optimum products. I don't like all of their stuff but their iron remover is just as good as anything else out there.
Yeah I believe the faces are but not sure about the barrels. At least the twists on my 99 barrels appear to be a raw and unpainted. Definitely not shiny and bright silver like the faces.
I just used the spray bottle it comes in. Wetting down the surface with water seems to make the 'LA is Totally Awesome' stuff work much better. As far as elbow grease, it didn't take a lot. It was more being patient and repeating application over and over. For those wheels I just used a Scotch Brite kitchen sponge.
I also did a set of BBS RS wheels that had at least 30 years of grime build-up. The build-up was so thick that I had to use some fine grade brass wool.
I bought some Mother's wheel cleaner and did one of the front wheels yesterday. I'm pretty sure they've never been cleaned; 17 years of buildup.
Took 3 applications of cleaner with a soft brush to get the barrels clean.
I wash with a dedicated bucket/soap/mitt getting in all the nooks and cranny's... then i use Meguiar's wheel cleaner and repeat the process with the mitt. I cleaned/clay barred/waxed about a year ago and it has held up.
I think the results are decent, but it does take a little time!
