Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hoping some people can advise me. Ive attached a video of an M96 engine with (what I would assume to be) a subtle lifter noise (light ticking). When underneath the car there is no ticking or tapping from the engine block. Does this engine sound fine to anyone who is experienced with these engines? Please and thank you.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Whoops. Here is the attachment: You Tube

POST 3Original post

That sounds like injectors. I would pull the serpentine belt and see if its still there. It sounds normal to me.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That could be it! I'll take a look.

POST 5Original post

I'm no engine expert but that sounds fine to me. If it was ticking - you'd really know about it. It's usually very pronounced in videos. If concerned check out Jake's new video on diagnosing bore scoring in his part 4 video.

POST 6Original post

Certainly not the "cluck, cluck, cluck" of a scored bore...

POST 7Original post

Yeah I don't hear anything but an engine running although the clip is very short and recording device moving. Longer clip stationary in suspicious area might help.

POST 8Original post

That's likely the ventilation regeneration valve also called the purge valve. Part # 996 110 129 53.

POST 11Original post

lol. You're more brave than I. Posting about a strange ticking noise on these forums is like asking for an overwhelming flood of doomsday predictions. I was even slightly hesitant to click and read this thread because my car has made a very similar sound since I bought it 3 years ago and I don't need anything else to lay in bed at night and worry about. Thanks for posting though, I feel much better.

POST 12Original post

Is it too early to hijack this thread and talk about oil?

Where is this located? I have a very similar sound. Is it easy to swap out?

Very easy. Upper right corner of the pic

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is all extremely helpful. Thanks for the advice. Ill try upload a static video ASAP. Im glad my hunch was correct that it wasnt the catastrophic knocking sound. Time to drive.

Maybe you should buy a cheap $30 bore scope and examine cylinder #6 following Jake Raby's advice in Part 4 of his bore scoring series? Seems like that would put this tickin' baby to bed once and for all.
