Of course I'll test drive the turbo, but there's only so much you can learn in a 10min test drive.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking at a 2005 911 Turbo (996). Any M5/M6 ex-owners or drivers that have spent any time in both cars, have any comments about making the switch?
I'm going to have to kick in about $30k CAD to make the
switch
(06 M6 69k km to a 05 911 Turbo 33k km). The 911 asking price is $50k CAD and has a rebuilt title because of somewhat minor front end damage which has been repaired.
I'm just trying to get as many opinions on this as possible from people that have driven both.
Of course I'll test drive the turbo, but there's only so much you can learn in a 10min test drive. Pictures below...
I had an 06 E60 M5 and switched from a Boxster S to the E60 and then back to a 996 base C2. I like my 911 better, and it doesnt even have a turbo.
The main thing I didnt like with the 06 was the SMG transmission. And the parts for the M5 were double the cost of some 996. When a Porsche is 1/2 the cost of some BMW parts, something aint right.
Besides that, they are totally different cars. A big V10 isnt something you will easily find these days. Watch Doug Demuros E60 M5 YouTube. It could be the best car or the worst car, but a Porsche 911 is a Porsche 911.
Drove an ‘06 M5 and an ‘06 CTTS. M5 was faster in a straight line, but the Cayenne turned as well, or better. I bought the Cayenne and never regretted leaving the M5. The 996 T is a much more impressive driving car than the M5, and hard to compare a 911 to a saloon car. I do love the M5 exterior and interior. Never driven an M6.
Could be wrong but price sounds steep for rebuilt title. No matter the reason, it is still a rebuilt title. $38k us plus tax. This a manual, auto, options etc? Looks clean from the angle in the pics.
I know a few people who owned E63 M5s and the two best days of owning that car for them were the day they bought it and the day they sold it. Constant check engine lights, electrical gremlins, and random parts needing replacement.
It won an award for most sophisticated engine in the world or something like that. It had 100 sensors and two computers to control it. The only thing unreliable would be the rod bearings, which should be replaced.
The unreliability comes more with the car itself, SMG transmission, and electronics. Like a lot of BMWs, the simple base models are generally reliable, but when you start climbing the ladder of features, luxury, electronics, it gets worse and worse. Theres a ton of that on the M5.
I think that's a car I looked I don't remember what I didn't like. If you have the VIN I can run it and let you know. I dont have the M model but have had many BMW's . The Porsche is a totally different animal. The Turbo is SPORTS CAR the BMW is a coupe
So its an unreliable car then. Classic rod bearing and SMG issues and then a bunch of electrical gremlins. Even if the engine is great it sounds like its not worth dealing with everything else that comes with it. I will take the e39 all day long.
Please stay away from the V10 in any chassis it is planted.
The SMG is a nightmare to repair and it constantly fails. (Keep in mind that in D mode it starts with 2nd gear and constantly slips, unless you have it in manual mode).
Then there is a gazillion of micro switches, sensors and micro-gizmos that will pop random error codes that may or may not be self cancelling. Having to visit the shop for a scan that shows nothing can become very frustrating.
Then there is the handling.
The M5/6 are heavy cars. Very heavy. And IMHO they should be classified as GTs and not sports cars.
I know that many people will disagree with this but driving an 996T is a better experience, especially if it is a manual one.
Resale also is another factor. The 996 seems to be desirable nowadays in contrary to the M6 that just depreciates day by day.
Cheers
My version of co-workers experience with an M5:
With exhaust the V10 is one of the best sounding engines out there.
SMG pump and oil cooler will need to be done if they haven't been already.
SMG is horrible compared to new stuff but fine when floggin.

Car is heavy but also hauls **** for what it is
After doing the currency conversion and noticing that the Turbo is a cab - I urge you to test drive a Carrera or maybe even Carrera S within your budget. It seems like you're after power with your selections and you may come to appreciate the balance that the "base" 911 offers despite not having eyebrow-raising HP numbers.
The V10 is intoxicating on the M cars but it as the saying goes - it comes with the rest of the package which is the E6X BMW. As for the 996, Cab or not, I just wouldn't do a branded title anything with serious money.
My cheap opinion. Good luck on the hunt!
Probably have never driven a Cayenne with that comment. No need to be that obvious.
Rebuilt title, especially a 911, is gonna have a tough resale if you don't own it close to fifty to sixty cents on a dollar.
Incorrect. I have driven several, and my personal opinion is (1) there are much better SUVs on the market, and (2) no Cayenne will ever come close the 911 driving experience. You are welcome to disagree.
I have to stick with the Turbo. After driving my M6 for five years, I can't see being happy with the power loss with the non turbo models.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but my E63 M6 has been the most trouble free car I've ever owned. Nothing but oil changes in 5 years and no issues at all, but then again it only has 69k km on it.
I agree - going down 200HP is a big deal if you like and are used to, power. Base 911s arent a match for 0-60 M5s or 50-100 for that matter.
The M5V10 that Doug DeMuro drove wasnt that well represented on the power comments. He said that the car isnt super crazy fast. I beg to differ. Perhaps he didnt use the full 8,250 RPM redline and go through 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears. Because if he did, he would feel how damn fast the M5/M6 really is. If you are used to that, a base 911 wont get there.
I don't really think they are comparable cars though but I guess it depends on what you are using them for. HP or not for a fun car I would take a base 911 if I had twisties to drive in, I would lean more towards 4 door luxury sedan if I had a lot of open highways. One of the most fun cars I ever owned was a 95 M3 with a measly 240 hp but that thing was dialed in with suspension, lightweight wheels, sticky tires, etc. I had a 2004 S4 that I loved with 100 more HP but it felt heavy, a joy to drive every day though.
Your also dropping about 1000 lbs,, Honestly a non turbo 911S is a totally a different experience,, sort of like comparing a FJ1300 to a Ninja,,
Both of them can kill you if not respected and both go fast.. I haven't lived with a M5 but even the M5 to the M3 its a different game..
I'd compare a M5/6 to the Panamera.. similar size and purpose.
BMW still has yet to build a SMG that doesn't require some intense service about the time the warranty runs out. <LOL>
