Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 996 cab and I need some help diagnosing what could best be described as a distinct "moan" for an extended moment. The noise is not coming from the engine and I originally thought it was wind noise from turbulence around the right mirror. It is definitely coming from outside the engine or interior and can be heard louder when you put the windows or top down. It does not sound mechanical or tire noise. It happens with the top up or down and is sporadic. I tried to tie it to engine speed since it at first seemed to happen around 30 mph but then I noticed it again around 45. I'm stumped. Any ideas or help help long-time Porsche owners could give would be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Cooling fan, either on the decklid, or the two in the front by the radiators? They can be quite loud, especially the radiator fans when in high speed mode.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I'll check it out but makes sense to me/ Thanks - BTW It Iyou don't have any info on my electrical problem interior lights/door locks do you? It is posted earlier today and has no responses.

POST 4Original post

Was the a/c ON? You can turn off the a/c next time and see if it's the culprit.

POST 6Original post

Check the grommet with the hole in it under the fuel filler. They will moan, hoot, whistle, sing a sing etc. When the purge valve gets stuck.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

fpb11 - Thanks for your suggestion. I looked at the grommet and it appears to be fine - what exactly am I looking for? It appears to be down tight around the entire grommet. I looked for any loose areas and couldn't find any. You mentioned the purge valve being clogged. How do I access it to check?
