Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings All! Any recommendations on an indie shop for PPI for my first Porsche? If I pull the trigger on this one, I will most likely not be there in person. Please feel free to comment on the car too! https://www.racperformance.com/2004-...ton-TX/6590877 Thanks in advance! Charles

POST 2Original post

Been a few years and before I knew anything about bore scoring but I bought my 4s at rac. I had them take the car to a local Porsche dealer for inspection. RAC was easy to deal with for the ppi and had no issues coordinating since I wasn't local. Good luck. Looks pricy for a 4S at $38k.

POST 3Original post

From my search, RAC is pretty much the best indy in their surrounding area. But of course you shouldn't ask them to do a PPI on a car they are selling (conflict of interest). So best bet is ask them to take it into a dealer and do the PPI there.

POST 4Original post

RAC used to Ruf auto center Dallas. Ive heard people recommend them for PPIs here. I wonder how theyd feel if you wanted to have Zims Autoteknik do a PPI on the car?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for the recommendation. Given the mileage, condition and options, any comments on the price? Does $37k sound reasonable? Charles

POST 6Original post

It's a beautiful looking car. It seems like it is at the high end of the spectrum price wise, but I tend to look at high mileage examples, so perhaps that is why I say that. Maybe low miles and condition makes this one worth more since it has less wear and tear. In that price range, I'd also consider a 997, and you may even be in high mileage 996 turbo territory.

POST 7Original post

Ive watched 986 and 996 prices obsessively for the past two years. RAC always has nicer cars but they always seem priced with some room for negotiation.

POST 8Original post

thats the asking price, it will trade lower. Does it need IMSB? Do a search in the results section of BaT for recent 996 c4s sales. Lower mileage is worth paying a premium for in my opinion. Above all, drive it first! Yes you might be able to step up to a high mileage turbo but they are different animals. I very recently purchased a 2003 c4s with 21800 miles and immediately replaced IMSB and clutch. 5,000 miles later I dont have a complaint. Mid-30s and Id do it again. (Its only $, plus lots more for gas!)

POST 9Original post

I love the C4S for the aesthetics alone. It's heavier, handles less nimbly and is slower than a carerra, but it looks the business. Of course, the TT is a different (and vastly more desirable "animal") . A C4S is the 996 era version of "turbo look" - the look but not the performance of the TT. For me (I can't speak for others), I'd rather have a Turbo, if the costs were similar.

POST 10Original post

Hi, First post for me. I'm looking to buy in March of next year when my lease expires on my current car. I have been watching this one for some time to see when it goes. It seems pretty high priced to my eye and it's been for sale for quite a while. I have heard both very good and very bad things about RAC, so I would certainly have a 3rd party PPI. No idea what kind of service history it has but it does look the part. They had a silver one just like it a few months back that actually was better optioned and already had a LN IMSB and new clutch with 10k more miles and it was listed at the same price. Not surprising that one didn't stick around long. I'm in Austin and will probably have to go to DFW to find a car when the time comes so I'm also interested in other shops that might be a good place for a full (pan drop) PPI in the Dallas/Carrolton area. Good Luck.

POST 11Original post

Id love to drive my c4s through the Austin hill country, cant think of more enjoyable road, if traffic disappeared.

You are close.... drive the hill country, but avoid Austin. All TX cities suck for driving now.

I lived in Austin nearly 40 years ago when the only thing on the way to the dam was a single bait & tackle shop. Now my daughter owns a home close to the dam and the traffic is an embarrassment. Its better here in NY/NJ.

POST 14Original post

When I bought my car at RAC it came with documentation from previous owner, was low miles. They were asking 32k and they held firm at that. I think we settled at 31.5 or so. This was 2012. Interestingly first owner was the US government in Mississippi so I only had documentation from the second owner. RAC had performed most/all maintenance if I recall during previous ownership. I don't recall if they provided a ppi but I opted to have another set of eyes take a look. Car was exactly as advertised including an area of scratches they were unable to buff out. They were easy to work with and helped arrange shipping both for ppi and to my house as I was not local.
