This is not a probability of success.

BMW used a very similar unit they don't seem to live very long, the units made then were universally kinda fragile.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Question for any of you who know about these 6-disc systems. Excuse me for asking in here, but this seems to be more active than the turbo forum, and the radio is all the same. I just bought a 2002 996 turbo w/ 29k miles, all stock including the original radio with the remote CD in the fronk. The CD will load, but not play. All the discs are loaded shiny side up, as it says to do. Everything else works on it, except no sound from the CDs. Has anyone had this issue before? I'd prefer to keep the car all original, so replacement with aftermarket isn't a solution.

POST 2Original post

I would try opening it up and seeing if its belt or direct drive, the belts have a habit of drying out and aging, especially if not used, BMW used a very similar unit they don't seem to live very long, the units made then were universally kinda fragile. They add little if any value to the cars (At least on BMW's), I'd store it and add a MP3/phone interface if carrying your own music is important. The units were almost all Dealer add-on, it seemed to be standard up-sell from about 95 to 2002, then MP3 tech took over.. One problem with these older electronics is there was a HUGE amount of substandard/counterfeit capacitors and resistors in this era, they dry out and leak/fail or just run out of spec. All the big manufacturers got burnt back in the day.. They also were surprisingly delicate, they don't like jolts, so cars with stiff suspension they tended to skip. My 06 330XI w/sport suspension I could corner hard enough to make it skip.. Even grooved pavement would tick it off.. Most were actually built buy Alpine or Kenwood depending on application...
