Suggestion

Living in a hot climate I never use heat or defrost, and I'm still getting plenty of cold A/C air so I haven't felt the need to pay a couple grand to have the dash removed to replace the foam.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I show up for a DE and with my typical karma (I must of raped the nuns and orphans before I lit the bus on fire and pushed it off the cliff) it rained all weekend. For the first time since I've owned the car, I had to use the front defroster and when set to high, I was getting a constant shower of black bits of foam insulation. Where is this coming from and is there anyway I can get to it to remove what is left? I will say the DE was highly educational as I had to be very smooth with all inputs to keep it on the track at speed.

POST 2Original post

Never heard of this issue before. Probably need to take it to your dealer. Sounds serious.

POST 4Original post

HVAC on many cars are sealed with a foam insulation [doors, joints etc] they dry up and can come out of outlets..........no biggee to live with it. as far as a DE in the rain.....it is real street life learning

I've never heard this expression before: "raped the nuns and orphans before I lit the bus on fire and pushed it off the cliff."

POST 8Original post

The foam used to be attached this flap inside your heater core. Or aliens. Definitely could be aliens.

POST 10Original post

Be sure and save the foam so that you can give it to the next owner and keep everything all original.

Oh, it's going really well - I'm driving a 996 aren't I? Plus, I think the Nigerians are really starting to take a shine to me . . .

POST 12Original post

My boxster and 996 always liked to spit up little pieces. I just cleaned it up.

POST 13Original post

This happens more often to cars that live in hot, humid environments. After the majority of the foam finishes disintegration your next post will be "I'm freezing/melting" "My heat/air conditioning doesn't work". There are multiple repair posts on this, search is your friend. Here is one: https://www.scribd.com/mobile/docume...r-Boxster-foam Same write up through renntech wi some better pics. POST 15Original post

This started happening with my 997 a few years ago and it seems to be quite common with that model. Sticky foam bits spewing out of all the dash vents. I kept a pair of long nosed tweezers in the glove box to pluck out the pieces that got stuck behind the louvers. Kept up for a couple years until, I assume, all of it was gone. Living in a hot climate I never use heat or defrost, and I'm still getting plenty of cold A/C air so I haven't felt the need to pay a couple grand to have the dash removed to replace the foam. The only ill effect I can see is the diverter flap no longer completely seals, so there's always some cold air coming out the defroster outlets, which causes the outside of the windshield to fog up when it's especially humid out. I halfway solved that with Rain-X which seems to shed the condensation quickly as soon as the car is under way.

couldnt agree more, I would suggest sending oil to black stone for diagnosis.

POST 18Original post

very common issues in these cars. i fixed it on my first Boxster when i replaced a leaking AC evaporator. i took a lot of pictures just so i can put everything back in place. the following weekend we had a tropical storm, so i staid at home, and created tease DIY guilds. i broke the project into three sections, so they can be used separately. if you only wish to clean it up, step 1 is enough.

POST 19Original post

just in case someone is interested in part 2 and 3 from some reason i cannot upload another file to the previous post. i guess the files are too large, so here is a link to my dropbox (i think you must have dropbox in order to download it) Dash removal https://www.dropbox.com/s/lcthesknyn...moval.pdf?dl=0 Evaporator replacement https://www.dropbox.com/s/gja11v6yi6...ement.pdf?dl=0

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Many thanks for the feedback. To be on the safe side I will have the car flat bedded to my indy where I will instruct him to immediately change the IMS, AOS and RMS again and then begin to diagnose the problem... The car lived in St Petersburg, FL before migrating to Houston a couple of years ago so the comment about heat and humidity make sense. I will just deal with the black snow for now as the heater use is very infrequent.

POST 22Original post

I just bought a 2001 model in Houston and it spit foam pieces at me all the way to Atlanta. Houston we have a (foam) problem!
