Suggestion

I thought about buying new tips myself, but I was able to use a bench-mounted wheel and 2-stage polish sticks to the Gillets to look better than new (saving $$$), and sound perfect.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently put a new Fabspeed exhaust on the Porsche - they sound great, but unfortunately the tips seem to rattle and almost crackle - I bought these tips and they turned out to be pretty thin, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it would make the exhaust sound a lot nicer if I invested in some better quality tips from Fabspeed or elsewhere? I already sold the Fabspeed tips I used to have and my OEM's were used and integrated in with these new ones (that's what I get for going to Midas). Any advice as to where I can find some nice, quality tips i.e. Fabspeed that won't cost an arm and a leg? It's for a 1999 C4 so if anyone has these "short" style tips and wants to sell please let me know. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Hey Sean, congrats on the Fabspeed exhaust, good move. So you have a set of stock OEM (Gillet) tips on now? I don't understand the "crackling" sound you describe? Midas did the install? Possibly they didn't install snug/tight, used different clamps, or tried to weld them on, ....? (Have to wonder how they installed the exhaust and tips?) A crackling sound in my experience would usually indicate an exhuast leak somewhere else, maybe around the manifold, or maybe the wide clamps that slide over and connect the exhaust to the cats? I thought about buying new tips myself, but I was able to use a bench-mounted wheel and 2-stage polish sticks to the Gillets to look better than new (saving $$$), and sound perfect. If you haven't already, you need to get under the rear bumper and look at the exhaust, when the car's cold obviously. Start shaking things, the tips should be completely tight, check for loose hardware, clamps, etc. The tips mount up under the bumper, so you have to get up in there. Or if you have a good indy, they should be able to tell you what's up at no charge....

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the helpful remarks - I actually installed the fabspeed exhaust myself, and without my "new", cheapo tips they sound great...I think it is because they are light metal and just sound cheap...they tend to sound rattly or tinny, causing a crackle that sounds pretty bad....I think I will try to get some tips that are more heavy duty and made better (like fabspeed tips or gillete). If anyone has some of these they are looking to get rid of let me know please!

POST 5Original post

Just a wild (but cheap) idea you might try. Do your tips have a hollow space around the actual exhaust pipe like my stock ones do? This space would point forward under the bumper. If they do, you could try stuffing this space with something like steel wool (but use copper or stainless). It would not show and might stop the noise. Might not work, but it passes the "easy and cheap to try without any damage" test.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jon, Thanks - yup, you are right on about the empty space - interesting suggestion and I will try it out tomorrow. Thanks and hope you are well!
