Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, Quick question for you today. My 2002 C4S seems to have the system (She's loud) and I have the proper switch in the center console. The switch is 'lightning' but it doesnt seems to actuate anything.. Perfect that way. I still have to confirm if the relay has been modded but that aside I would like to know if the system was an option or retrofited. What make me doutb is the switch... I tought nobody would instal the switch when retrofitting. The option XLF is not mentionned on the VIN sticker. What is your opinion Thanks you

POST 2Original post

I think if you retrofit it, other than a remote, the switch is the only way. Pull the horseshoe and see if the wiring looks like it is part of the wire harness.

POST 3Original post

Retrofitted. The option code for sport exhaust was XLF. Chances are either you have a vacuum line disconnected, a bad changeover valve, someone modded the relay, or one or both of a vacuum valves on the mufflers is bad (they fail in the loud position). It wasnt common to add the switch. It added a lot of labor to the cost of the retrofit and most people just wanted them loud all the time anyways.

POST 4Original post

I have pse, my button functions as it should and I switch it to quiet mode absolutely never. Not saying I wouldnt investigate and make simple repairs, just wouldnt let it bug you too much.

POST 5Original post

Hello, I too have the PSE with broken button that does not light up. I also came to find out the the diode in the relay was also intentionally cut to always have the Loud exhaust tone ON (35-45mph) I don't mind at all. My vin shows XLF.

POST 6Original post

For what its worth, a cut diode (also known as pse hack) wont make it so the loud setting is always on. It simply disables a factory setting to put the exhaust in quiet mode at lower speeds (17-32mph or something like that). If the button doesnt work its a disconnected line, broken line, actuator failure or something like that.

POST 7Original post

Wow, I didnt know PSE was even an option for a 996. Might be kind of rare?

POST 8Original post

Check the vacuum lines that plug into the actuators when I purchased my car, the PSE was always on, so when I investigated, I saw the vac lines had slipped off (the PO may have unplugged them to bypass the low speed cutout, but I did the relay hack)

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Perfect guys I will have a look at it tonight and see if that could be the cause Thanks

POST 10Original post

I have a 2002 C4S with XLF option code but no rocker switch in the cabin, or any remote to control solenoid...what gives?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, Had a quick look today and here's what Ive found. Seems like the previous owner just tapped the line with a screw.. It seems that the line have been disconnected from the solenoid. I have to inspect what's connected to it instead of the 'Y' lines, and re-connect the system to see if its still working. I got to clean the engine bay during my vacation so I will do this soon and let you know if it worked!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys it seems more complicated then I tought. I really dont understand what the previous owner have done to it but here's some pictures of the actual setup. Any idea of how I should route the system? I will dismantle the air box tommorrow and I will provide better pictures but if I could get an idea of what goes where that would be great. Pictures with blue circles: Vacuum from the intake seems to go down to a white filter before going to black vaccum manifold? Red circles: From actuator to the driver side of the engine Yellow circle: One part Not connected. Second part seems to be connected to a braided line that goes to the PSE system "Y" connector plugged with a simple bolt.... I know I need an engine bay clean-up... I just realised I have an hydraulic fluid leak from the tank cap and the result still have to be cleaned... On a side note any idea of how to solve this easily? Just changing the seal should do it? Thanks for your help Os

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alright after removing the air box its a bit easier to understand but Im still wondering what could attach to the actuator. Here's some pictures so you can probably guide me on what goes where: Actuator on the left side of the engine. One end goes to a braided line which I suppose is the PSE. One nipple is not attached to anything. The "Y" one end is connected to the PSE braided line, one connected to another "Y" connector which is connected in the vacuum manifold and the intake. The other end is plugged by a simple bolt.... Actuator on the right side of the engine. One nipple is connected to the vacuum manifold, the other one seems to go down on the left side of the engine. Im actually cleaning the engine bay so a detailed vacuum lines diagram or your thoughts on how to solve this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Same here, I have the XLF listed on my 02 C4S but not switch, or button on the dash. Any idea?
