Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, Have an 04 996 C2 with cargraphic mufflers, recently installed a cargraphic 200cel xpipe - can't be happier with the performance. However I think my old cats were on the way out because my exhaust is now quieter and doesn't have the burble like it used to?? Anyway I'm thinking about doing the gundo or fister hack to my cargraphic mufflers. Any feedback from someone who has does this to their name brand mufflers? Cargraphic do offer an exhaust with a fister style flap system so leaning towards doing that. Dont really like the idea of modifying an already good product but I want the sound back! Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Or...leave the mufflers alone and buy a set of decent 200 cell cats. If you liked sound with the prior cats and same muffler, why mess with success? Also, the gundo hack/Fister mod is just a pipe welded between in and out of muffler, allowing some exhaust to by-pass the muffler chamber. No valves.

POST 3Original post

02 996 C4 Did the gundo hack several years ago ;cheap and works great good sound and passed the CA. smog tests.

The FD Motorsports (Fister) mod is more than just a pipe welded between the in/out pipes. There are internal mods too.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 15174573

FD's 996 and 997 just have a pipe added - nothing modded internally

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 15174573

No internal mods to FD mufflers. I have a set on my 996 and my 997.

POST 7Original post

I did a DIY Fister D mod ... 1.75 merge pipe filmed with Iphone 5 so not the best sound quality You Tube

I was actually loosing power from the cats, but I was gaining sound, now i've got more power but lost sound. Here in lies the issue. Cargraphic are some of the best cats you can get they use the German HJS cats - they are the same ones that Fabspeed uses. I know there are no valves involved in the gundo or fister I was making reference to Cargraphic having a version of their mufflers that basically have a fister mod with a valve. I'm curious if anyone has done a gundo or fister to reputable mufflers for more sound. I think by design the fister hack would be better due to the distance between the inlet and the outlet. Alternatively I could do a muffler bypass but I think thats going a bit too far for my wants. Cargraphics I currently have: Cargraphic with fister mod + flap

I have Fisters on both my 993 (internally modified) and on my 996. I guarantee you they are modified internally as I spoke with them about it and you can clearly see they were cut open and re-welded. Perhaps the difference is my 996 mufflers were not stock 996 cans but rather B&B cans.

POST 10Original post

Love my Fisters. Too nicely machined to ever be called a 'hack.' And if FD Motorsports didn't do the work, it ain't a Fister.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone but has anyone done the mod to say a Fabspeed set of mufflers? I've contacted cargraphic to ask their advice.

Why not talk to Fabspeed as they are active here on the forums?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15181966

Was after more of a forum answer because cargraphic told me it wasn't possible but I think they just want to sell me their super sound version (with the flaps)

This is certainly B&B specific; Fister does not modify stock mufflers internally they just weld in the bypass pipe and refinish according to the customer's preference.

POST 16Original post

Just had a speed shop do my Gundo hack today and am pleased with the results, although its a bit more aggressive / loud coming off the line than expected. It may be because the original stock exhaust was so tame sounding and I will get used it in time. I live in the burbs and will need to get into second gear at a lower RPM than before to keep relations good with my neighbors. I've read that the Fister hack is louder than Gundo, so glad I did not take the route. The fact that I have a Cab makes it more of a factor, as not to drown out conversations or music. I went with the 1.5 inch pipe and have no issues with droning yet. But overall, I am happy and feel that the Gundo sound is more appropriate to what the car should produce.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone but so far I haven't really found any answers, has anyone modified non standard mufflers with either type of gundo or fister modification?

POST 18Original post

See post #9 - looks like David993S did with some B&B mufflers on his 996.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15188034

Thanks must have missed that. Haven't heard of B&B mufflers. Unfortunately I think I'd have to do a gundo rather than a fister on mine as the inlet and outlet are quite far appart compared to the standard mufflers, thoughts?

B&B = Billy Boat. I think they made a name for themselves with Corvette exhaust. I had them on a 350Z - quality was great but drone was too obnoxious for me. https://www.lmperformance.com/shop.a...ort=popularity

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone that contributed, unfortunately along with an additional pipe and the flaps the cargraphic super sound muffler is actually smaller. As such I probably wont achieve what i'm after with just that modification. On the lookout for the Cargraphic super sound version now!
