To disable, I pulled the pump apart and filled the entire thing with Caulk.

I could have used a plug for the hole, but I didnt want to spent the time to figure out the correct size plug and go hunting it down, so caulking it up seemed simple and easy to prevent leaks.

Suggestion

I've read about losing the caps and even denting/marring the paint on the top when they self eject, so I am afraid to use my windshield washer when moving for fear of pushing lever the wrong way.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was rebuilding my windshield washer when I got to the headlight washers. I decided to disable the headlight washer rather than replace the pump. I used the headlight washer once, and i am not sure what it does. In any case, it only snows 1-3 times per year where I live, so I really dont have a problem with snow build up. I have no idea if it serves any other purpose. I didnt like the water marks it left on my car after I used it. To disable, I pulled the pump apart and filled the entire thing with Caulk. I left it to dry, then reinstalled it. I taped up the end of the electrical connector and the tube for the headlight washers so that dust wont get in, if I ever decide to restore the functionality. I didnt feel like paying $50-80 for something that I dont use. I was rebuilding my Washer tank, and soaked all the seals in Aerospace 303, which should rejuvenate my rubber seals. How many people use their headlight washers? Anyone else disabled theirs?

POST 2Original post

I remove the fuse out of mine, didn't want to activate it by mistake again and lose the very expensive cover. About the only thing on this car I find very cheesy is that cover.

Accidentally hit mine while driving and it immediately flew off. Poor design for sure. Luckily I found it on the highway and glued it back on.

Excellent point! I will do the same. I've read about losing the caps and even denting/marring the paint on the top when they self eject, so I am afraid to use my windshield washer when moving for fear of pushing lever the wrong way. Thanks! Driven for 52 years and never wanted/needed them before this car so don't need them now.

I deleted mine on my 996.1, which involved getting new triangular lenses for the headlights without the passthrough hole for the washers, removing the washers, plugging the lines, and removing the fuse. I didn't bother removing the pump or hoses since that would involve disassembling more of the car for a trivial weight reduction; not worth the effort unless it's already taken apart for some other reason. Looks much cleaner without them IMO, and makes it nicer to wash the car without snagging the wash mitt on the little alien heads sticking through the headlights. Ended up being a money-making effort as I was able to sell the old washers for more than the cost of the new lenses. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...er-delete.html

Hey is this the correct lenses replacement to eliminate the washer? The picture looks off. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911....c100005.m1851

POST 8Original post

well, mine is the mk.1 so a different design without the cover; funny thing is the nozzle sopporting the little round spray nozzles crack over time and the round nozzle spray heads fly off...one of my first experiences with the car. Bought kluge parts and fixed the nozzles but then the pop up sprayer body leaked...basically I decided to just replace it with new and should never have to do it again since the car spends most of its time in the garage. The other nozzle, I reinforced the housing around the spray head with JB weld. The sage continued, however when the pump failed...took apart the whole resovoir in the wheel well and replaced both pumps while in there...windshield and headlights, guess I just like everything to work whether its used or not.

Awesome writeup you have there. My windscreen washer was broken, so I had everything pulled apart. For my headlight washer, the motor was working (spinning), but the housing was cracked, so I was afraid that it would cause a leak sooner rather than later. For the price of a replacement pump of $70, I decided not spend that money for something that I didnt use. I caulked up the internals so that it would not leak. I could have used a plug for the hole, but I didnt want to spent the time to figure out the correct size plug and go hunting it down, so caulking it up seemed simple and easy to prevent leaks. I wish I found your post earlier, I would have pulled apart my headlight washer system and sell it as well. lol.

POST 10Original post

I had to remove my washers on my 996.1 when I put turbo radiators in the car that are 50% larger and needs the space under the headlight....even had to customize the radiator brackets to make it work, Just bought EBAy blanks that were half the price and were perfect. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Headlight-C...item2cd5e52fdb If anyone wants to make an offer on all of the old headlight washer hardware let me know.

POST 11Original post

When I bought my 2001 996, I missed the fact that a washer ball was missing on both sides. I dont plan to use them and agree I am not sure what they would wash off, but want my Porsche to be As Built. I bought new replacement washer assemblies off eBay. There is some adjustment to the mounting once the headlight has been removed and I had to re-remove the head light and raise the assembly to get the correct fit through the headlight lens. My model didnt come with the silver cover, but when I accidentally bumped the control stalk, washer ***** came loose from the original washer, forcing the replacements. Maybe I will disable them as well. Good luck

POST 12Original post

My understanding is (at least on 996.1) that if you got the litronics option you would get the washers.... I had a similar situation on Mercedes. There must be some connection as to why HID lights need washers....but could never figure out why...
