Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I would think the hydraulic lines might have to be dipped into some kind of reservoir to allow fluid to slosh back and forth to lubricate the internal components of the rack.
Leading evidence: 'Use racks can be had' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Lubricate internal components of the rack' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Lubricate manual rack -- grease fittings, i assume

Then you would need some way to lubricate the manual rack -- grease fittings, I assume.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So after seeing Hoovies latest V8 swap vid he mentions that he didn't hook up the power steering to his frankenstein car.
I guess he's running full on manual steering?
Has anyone else done this? seems like an inexpensive mod for improved steering feel although harder when parking. Kind of appeals to me.
I would think the hydraulic lines might have to be dipped into some kind of reservoir to allow fluid to slosh back and forth to lubricate the internal components of the rack.
It's a common mod in the 944 world, as 944 racks are prone to leak. Here's a link to an outfit that converts 944 racks ... they also do Boxster racks, so I imagine a 996 rack would not be a problem for them:

I'd think that a true manual conversion would entail removing the PS pump and putting some kind of idler in its place to keep the serpentine belt from flying off into the ozone. Then you would need some way to lubricate the manual rack -- grease fittings, I assume.
I hate those "that would be stupid, why would you do THAT?" responses, but...the steering in the 996 is pretty darn decent, and it's reliable.
Power steering deletes rate up there with A/C deletes - for a street or mixed street/track car, it probably seems like a great idea. For the first week.
Manual steering in any car that weighs more than a ton sounds like a rotten time.
If this thread was strictly for requesting technical advice and opinions are unsolicited, I apologize in advance and will replace this text with a photo of pee pee eye.
Would electric be worse? I found lots of used racks can be had on ebay for $100-150
However its not as simple as removing the power stuff, there is a torsion bar which twists, this has to be replaced or supplemented with something solid.
I don't have the bandwidth for another project right now so I'll keep it on the backburner until I get some more time.
