I will carry a "weighted siphon" hose of small diameter (3/8ths) to get to the bottom of the tank so I can get water out or check for water if suspect.
Leading evidence: 'Check water if suspect' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check water if suspect' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have second 5 gallon container of clean fuel and pour this into gas tank.

Every once in a while -- once a year, twice a year, your call -- run tank down to quarter a tank maybe a bit lower and then drain (or siphon) remaining gas/etc out of tank into an otherwise clean gas container.

Where I live and travel we have lots of poor and contaminated fuel -- in my current car -- a 1990 964 -- I carry always carry a spare filter and have used the spare 3 times in the last two years alone due to water in the fuel from remote filling stations.

At that point the fuel filter moved inside the fuel tank (see diagram) and does not normally ever need replacing (according to Porsche).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Let gas drained out settle then pour off cleaner stuff back in tank or set aside for lanwmowers, chain saws or just dispose of it in a safe and eco-appropriate way.

I will use one of those funnell's with a water trap(very fine gauze) when filling at remote locations (awkward and goofy to use but better safe than sorry)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Am about to trade on a 2002 Targa and reading here to get some "background" spotted the filter deletion being mentioned.
And -- if I must carry a new pump and filter unit as a spare --
1 how long will it take to change on the side of the road and
2 is there a drain plug on the tank and
3 how hard is it to get to it to drain out the water?
Thanks in advance
1. Possible, but may not be practical.
2. Not that I am aware of.
3. You could try a gas dryer like HEET or similar product.
The fuel system changed in MY2002 to a returnless fuel system. At that point the fuel filter moved inside the fuel tank (see diagram) and does not normally ever need replacing (according to Porsche).
would it be possible to carry a clear container in the car for the times when you need to gas up at one of those places? pump to the container, then pour into the car??
just a thought way out on the edge of simple ideas?
course I try to avoid filling up at out of way stations, etc.
Carry a spare filter/pump and instructions on how to change it but consider this.

On the road try to keep tank at least quarter full --- that is fill up when gas levek drops to quarter tank vs. running until low fuel warning light comes on.
Whenever possible fill up tank at busy station to get freshest and possibly less contaminated fuel thus the less you have to fill up at out of the way stations.
IOWs, preventative measures rather than corrective ones.
And you have the spare fuel pump/filter assembly with you just in case...
I don't live/drive in desolate areas but I'd advise against carrying any gas in a container in car. Even if a 5 gallon plastic "can" might fit in front trunk if it ever sprang a leak the car would reek of gas ever after if it didn't burn.
And even a minor collision with another vehicle or an animal could rupture that container with disasterous results. Even the jostling from miles of traveling could cause plastic tank to crack or cap to leak and vent fumes into car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Hi! I have a 2002 carrera and i have a problem starting which eventually stranded me. I had it flat-bedded to the dealer and was diagnosed to have fuel pump failure. The dealer has to order the part from other dealer because they don't stock the part as they said the part doesn't fail.
It cost me like a grand to have it fixed. they dealer would not cover the expense because it's out of warranty although it has only like 18,000 miles on it. So although porsche says it supposed to last forever, it's not true.
Thanks for the replies -- gives me some guidance.
Looks like the retrofit may not be the way to go

I will order and keep as an in car spare a pump/filter unit and the tools to change.
