Reported cause
Both my Boxster and Turbo have manifested noises that proved to be from the accessory drive.
Leading evidence: 'from the accessory drive' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'from the accessory drive' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check accessories' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Clearly the new belt was not tracking properly and it looked like it was the water pump pulley that it was rubbing against.

Then with the belt removed I checked all the accessories for any bearing play.

With the water pump I used the "trick" of removing the belt and starting and running the (cold) engine just long enough to confirm the noise was not present with the belt removed.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was driving on the freeway yesterday and my engine started to make this sound. I pulled off and got it towed home. The car starts and idles fine and theres no check engine lights. Could this be a bad water pump or worse? Thanks in advance.
Ps Dont kind the duct tape filler tube. I broke it last week doing my engine mounts and havent had time to fix it

It may be risking further damage if it is something serious; but, to eliminate a number of possibilities, you could remove the serpentine belt and see if that eliminates the noise.
That's certainly the safest decision. You could also remove the belt and rotate everything that turns by hand to see if you find anything unusual. GL w/ solution.
Coincidentally this happened to me last week!
I replaced the upper idler pulley and alternator yesterday, and the noise went away. It's most likely your alternator bearings going bad.
By the way, your oil filler tube must be completely sealed in order to keep the correct vacuum, so if you don't replace it soon you will get a CEL
Good Luck!
i hope this is the case. If they replace the alternator that would kill two birds with one stone since I can have them replace the filler tube. Did you have any additional sounds when it happened?
Could be the alternator but doesn't have to be. More water pumps fail than alternators. The clip could have been better -- but I'm not asking for a 2nd clip -- but the time the alternator pulley was visible I didn't see any wobble or any signs of any play at the pulley.
Couldn't see the water pump pulley.
It is hard to pinpoint the source of the noise without some work.
Up to you how much effort you want to put into this.
Both my Boxster and Turbo have manifested noises that proved to be from the accessory drive. Water pump in the Boxster. Twice the Turbo had at least one idler roller bearing go bad.
Water pump noise was a low volume rumble like sound.
First time the idler roller bearing failed the noise sounded like a "dry bearing". Second time the bad idler roller bearing emitted an intermittent high pitched chirp.
With the water pump I used the "trick" of removing the belt and starting and running the (cold) engine just long enough to confirm the noise was not present with the belt removed.
It wasn't present.
Then with the belt removed I checked all the accessories for any bearing play. Only the water pump had any and it was not much. Noticed the inside edge of the relatively new belt had a sharp edge. I had the old belt handy and checked it and both edges were dull. Clearly the new belt was not tracking properly and it looked like it was the water pump pulley that it was rubbing against.
Put the belt back on -- same direction of rotation and of course routed correctly -- I made a diagram before I removed the belt -- and flat bedded the car to a dealer and had the water pump/T-Stat replaced. Afterwards: Noise gone.
With the Turbo I nursed the car home and at the dealer the tech id'd the idler up top next to the power steering pump pulley. The car was covered by a CPO but I had the tech replace all idler rollers and tensioner. (The Boxster in now over 315K miles has never had an idler roller/tensioner roller bearing go bad.)
Second time I forget which roller it was but again I had all replaced.
The Turbo water pump "failed" but it was a leak not noise that indicated the water pump was bad.
Best to avoid running the engine any. In these cases my advice is that the engine should only be run under the supervision of the tech who will be responsible for id'ing the source of the noise and addressing its cause.
Unless you are willing to get your hands dirty and prepared to ID the source of the noise on your driveway and replace a noisy idler roller bearing, a noisy alternator, a noisy water pump, etc. my advice is to flat bed the car to a qualified Porsche shop for a professional's diagnosis.
