i am certain his use of "disposable" is not to degrade these gearboxes, but to distinguish that USUALLY a GTx tranny is rebuild over and over as it ages, while the 996 97 987 986 boxes are usually "replaced" as the cost/benefit makes more sense.

If you were to check your history of the car you own, you would find that up until a few years ago there were NO parts available for your transmission.

The GT2/3s essentially use the same box the 911s have used for 20 years.

but then again most people on here are not going to be tearing apart their own tranny's and replacing gears in them....
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Reason for my asking is because I have read complaints on second gear pop outs (not just on the 996 turbo trannys.) If you were to fix that issue, wouldn't you replace syncros?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I searched and was not able to find anything. Is it possible to put a G96/96, G96/90 or G96/88 in a 996? If so, is the 996 shifter assy compatible or would that need to be swapped out as well?
TIA

HEY !!!
I dont know, BUT I have a GT2 wing that would look awesome on your car!!!
PM me if you are interested, i will make you a hell of a deal on it
Trannies are TOTALLY different. The GT2/3s essentially use the same box the 911s have used for 20 years. With the advent of the 996/986 Porsche (with help from Toyota) designed the disposable tranny.
I realize they are totally different, that is why I am inquiring if they will work. I thought it was VW/Audi as opposed to Toyota, but either way.
Thanks on the wing, but really just trying to find out about the trans conversion...
mister "site sponsor"
I call BS and have seen the boxster tranny completely disassembled as well as the GT3...there isnt that much different and if you would care to elaborate on your claim as to the use of disposable trannies in 986- 996 (and presumably 987 and 997's) sure the way the pinion shaft is assembled is a bit flakey and causes issues and the syncros are only being replaced by one company capable of doing the laser welding.....I am sure many people would be happy to give you an equal earful of the opposite opinion....
IMO that comment sucks
ah.... there are very few shops that can put a 996 997 986 987 gear box back. powerhouse is one of them. and if you indeed saw these taken apart, you would there that they are completely different than a GTx based box.
as to can one xplant a GTx box into a 996, yes, given enough money, you can put anything into anything.
and unless you are b copan, s ***, kip, kerrigan etc, i wouldn't call bob on his knowledge on these gearboxes.
Thanks, I am not claiming to have any real knowledge... but then again most people on here are not going to be tearing apart their own tranny's and replacing gears in them....
My point is that a comment like "dispossable parts" does nothing to help the masses of us who have to go to a shop for repairs. Then when they tell us... awe gee, you need it replaced.... we just say Ok w/o knowing they are rebuildable (based on comments like that one he made)
I dont want to start a fight or get too technical, but a blanket statement almost always has another side to it.............
^ understood.
i had a bunch of 996's before. and i know about the so called "disposable" engine/gearboxes.
but tell you what, things are turning around. there are now shops both in UK and USA who specializes in rebuilding the engine and making them stronger. they aren't that "disposable" afterall.
oh and btw, "disposable" isn't really that bad. a replacement engine M96/M97 is cheaper than rebuilding a GTx block! same goes with gearboxes. "rebuildable" isn't all that great :-)
i am pretty neutral as you can see i have a "disposable" and a "rebuildable" car in my avatar. my take is that every porsche is good. well.... cayenne............ not quite convinced me yet
for non GTx gear box, i am not sure. contact powerhouse.
most will not rebuild for just a change in syncro, usually you re gear the box and in the process, you change worn syncro's. otherwise, the cost benefit doesn't make sense.
I am no expert either but if these were so disposable why don't we hear a bunch of complaints about faiulres here? I think the tone of the message left a little to be desired considering where this post was made.
Reason for my asking is because I have read complaints on second gear pop outs (not just on the 996 turbo trannys.) If you were to fix that issue, wouldn't you replace syncros? Obviously, regearing would be a sensible option to consider doing as a "while you are there; why not deal."
viper bob is a friend, and is well experienced with all things porsche. i am certain his use of "disposable" is not to degrade these gearboxes, but to distinguish that USUALLY a GTx tranny is rebuild over and over as it ages, while the 996 97 987 986 boxes are usually "replaced" as the cost/benefit makes more sense.
there are indeed more failure of m96 vs GTx blocks, mostly due to track use. (this is from personal experience, not vast data on spreadsheet, just anecdotal, so take it with grain of salt.)
the sames goes with tranny.
i know that's a major issue with some early 996TT's. never heard of it on NA cars. i dont know if that's a syncro issue, you can chk with dealer and get some idea of pricing. also there may be used box available for bolt on at wreck yards. sorry, not much help.
Lighten up...
If you were to check your history of the car you own, you would find that up until a few years ago there were NO parts available for your transmission. Porsche dealers had NO parts listings for that tranny. They were a Remove and Replace unit. It was not until recently that some places started making parts, Porsche starting releasing some of them, or we even found other boxes from other manufactureres to pull parts. When Porsche introduced that box (yes again with the help of Toyota and not VW. They were looking for some Japanese help here) they were a non-serviced unit (aka disposable). Why? The cost of repairs with parts and labor at the dealer was considered higher than the cost of replacement. Factor in a reduction in manufacturing costs by making them so they do not have to engineer in servicability to keep unit costs down and you have the 996 tranny. So fast forward to reality and people do not want to buy a new tranny becuase they have a bad synchro. So like everything else they were started to be taken apart. Problem is that they were designed not to be serviced, so a 200 ton press is required for some of the steps. Now Porsche has come out recently with the parts to service them.
IMO - OK so you don't like my statements of fact and you think they suck. OK, so what? That is called reality. Try it sometime. I am dealing in facts not comments, opinions, or flights of fancy here.
I appreciate the debate on the 996 vs GT2 or GT3 transmission, but the real point of the thread was to determine if it is a reasonable swap.
As someone mentioned above you can put anything in anything with enough money, but since one of these transmissions was offered in a 996, I am wondering how plug & play the swap is.
Not they will not interchange. Not even feasible to try. Completely different. Sorry I thought from my first post in the thread that it would not work...
