Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace .html' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '$1200 quote)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace .html' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have never heard of a flywheel needing to be replaced due to smearing of clutch material on the flywheel surface.

Suspected cause
I ended up going to a dealer (it was the $1200 quote) but had to drive about 2 hours away.

I just had dealer replace my clutch as part of RMS change.

No, I left the car there on a Saturday and picked it up on the next Friday on my way to run the Tail of the Dragon.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine is going to go soon (45K) and the dealer quoted me $2200 for everything.
$1370 seems like a ridiculously great deal...
I wish I had a lift... I'd do it myself.
Do the math. Book is 4 hours @ $125/hr. Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing is $400. Add $100 if the flywheel needs to be resurfaced.
Hopefully the $2200 quote includes a reach around....
negative. that was just a standard line item description.
I went to the dealer and I think I posted accordingly.
It was really just a post that lays out the cost differential between the stock and the performance options. Labor varies according to geographic location, of course (not by that much, but still)
Regardless, you paid way too much. Essentially a R&R clutch and related parts is no different from a R&R on a VW bug. Drop the Transmission, and then everything is right there.
I recently had mine replaced. I got quotes from both dealers and indy's that ranged from $1200 to $1500. I ended up going to a dealer (it was the $1200 quote) but had to drive about 2 hours away.
A new flywheel is roughly $850 if needed. So it can cost $2k if they replace everything.
I was not aware they can resurface the 996 dual-mass flywheel.
Is a simple scrub with sandpaper or a
flex-hone
carbide based abrasive the same as 'resurfacing' a flywheel? I would imagine negligible amounts of material are removed to affect the balance of a dual mass flywheel. This is obviously not the same as milling the flywheel.
I have never heard of a flywheel needing to be replaced due to smearing of clutch material on the flywheel surface.
I just had dealer replace my clutch as part of RMS change. Cheapest price for a clutch kit (OEM) is $445 from Sunset.
