Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Based on my understanding of the relationship front and rear tires sizes have regardiing the operationg of the C4's AWD system (the viscous coupling) the tire sizes you want to use are inappropriate and should not be used.
Leading evidence: 'Use are inappropriate and should not be' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use are inappropriate and should not be' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
You should note that tire manufacturers allow almost a 10% size difference in a specific tire size and use the same molds for more that one tire size
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all, so its my first post on here and im hoping you guys can help me out.
So my car is a 2000 996 c4 NB, It came equipped factory with 255 40r17 rear tires and 205 50r17 fronts.
it has a 7" front rim and a 9" rear rim. so here is my question. Could I install a 275/40/17 (25.7") in the rear and a 215/50/17 (25.5") in the front. This would give it a much better contact patch. The rear 9" rim should be adequate for a 275 tire just want to get your input! Thanks.
Based on my understanding of the relationship front and rear tires sizes have regardiing the operationg of the C4's AWD system (the viscous coupling) the tire sizes you want to use are inappropriate and should not be used.
First the tires the car came with:
205-50x17: 25.1" dia. and 805 revs/mile.
255-40x17: 25.0" dia. and 808 revs/mile.
Note the rear tires make more revs/mile than the fronts.
Now the tires you want to fit:
215-50x17: 25.5" dia. and 792 revs/mile.
275-40x17: 25.7" dia. and 786 revs/mile.
Note the rear tires would make *fewer* revs/mile than the fronts.
The difference in revs/mile between the front and rear tires would have a braking effect on the front tires vs. the transfer of torque from the rears to the fronts.
Not only would the car lose any benefit from the AWD system it would suffer from the front tires being braked whenever the car was moving. This could affect the car's handling and not in a good way.
You need to search out a set of tires that will fit the 17" wheels and because of the diameters result in the same (or close enough and I don't know what that is) revs/mile difference between the front tires and the rear tires.
255-40/17 and 225-45/17 are virtually identical, at least for RE-71R's and will mount fin on those wheels
You should note that tire manufacturers allow almost a 10% size difference in a specific tire size and use the same molds for more that one tire size
