Suggestion

The only changes I would make is maybe to roll back the two-tone bumper and (pause to put flame suit on) put original orange side markers in (not the popular opinion, especially on RL, but I like the contrast of the orange on the side view, particularly on blue).

Have definitely noticed how much lower I am to the ground in this, and even had an SUV get a little close for comfort on the test drive, so keeping that situational awareness up for sure!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Flew up to Raleigh on Wednesday and bought my first Porsche, a 1999 996, and I am loving it! This is also my first time driving a manual transmission (had a lesson from my cousin in his GTI, but that's about it) and I only stalled it in traffic twice on the 6.5hr, 350mile drive back to Atlanta! Really didn't take long to get the hang of it, though I'm certainly not very good at it and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still a little stressed driving it around in traffic. Overall it's in nice condition, though I already have a list of things I want to do including new tires, refurbishing the headlights, and a good detailing all over. Would like to change out the wheels, but balking a bit at the prices. Not sure what I'd be able to get if I sold the ones that are on there now. Despite the flaws I still love it and am really excited I decided to go for it. Also excited to join the amazing community of enthusiasts here on Rennlist!

POST 2Original post

She's a beauty. I'm biased, because it's the same color as mine. Previous owner changed out the pumpkins, too. And perhaps the instrument bezels have the snap-on silver frame people have been buying.

POST 4Original post

Welcome to the madness. Nice car. Not sure if you have driven many sports cars but many people, particularly jacked-up 4x4's, have trouble seeing us in the outside rear view mirrors. Stay frosty when in traffic!

My other car is the one next to it here; you could say I have a type. Have definitely noticed how much lower I am to the ground in this, and even had an SUV get a little close for comfort on the test drive, so keeping that situational awareness up for sure!

POST 6Original post

Shes a beauty and I like the wheels very much on this color! Welcome and have fun. Learn to rev-match!

Nice! My first car was an '83 GTI. Give those headlight a little love and it she will be pristine.

POST 8Original post

Whats the mileage on it. BTW it has the double race bearing on the 99 job for sure. Have fun.

POST 9Original post

Yes, welcome to the club, love the color too here... but mine is a Cab, You are in the right place here to find the answers to any questions you may have. I did the same in 2006 when I got my car. Enjoy the fun drive every time you take her out, cheers.

POST 10Original post

Welcome, and good choice on the year and 6MT! Wow, just learned to drive a manual? Very impressive. My car looked VERY similar to yours when I picked it up 3 years ago. My advice (to my 3 years ago self) would be... 1) All maintenance up to date 2) Headlights Refinished (as you mentioned) 3) Lowering Springs (improves appearance and performance) 4) Wheels and Tires (so many good options, research and decide!) 5) Enjoy!

POST 11Original post

Looks great and congrats on learning to drive with three pedals!

POST 12Original post

How about a close up of that two toned grille?

POST 13Original post

Litronics, rear wiper, three spoke wheel and great colour - nice spec. Is that an aftermarket stereo, too? Enjoy

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's got ~120,600 miles on it. Had a big service at 99,500 miles for the IMS, RMS, clutch, and water pump. Just came from a detailer and got an estimate for $650+ to get the scratches out (EDIT: from the body, not headlights. have some pretty good scratches on the hood/rear and they said it would need some wet-sanding). Was already planning to DIY the headlights, but for that much money this might be a good opportunity to learn how to fix paint scratches myself too! I know I'm new to this, but I'm counting 5 spokes...what am I missing? Yep, it's got a Pioneer avic-x940bt with touchscreen, bluetooth, and backup cam. Sure, here's a couple closeups.

POST 16Original post

LOL 650 for the headlights? That is a joke right? I took mine to Atlanta Dent Company in Roswell off Mansell Road. Cost was like $100 and they look perfect. $650 is a ripoff. They also could respray the front bumper if you wanted to get that touched up as well.

POST 17Original post

I have a ‘99 and those wheels were a $1,200 option. Mine are listed as 18” Lt. Alloy Turbo Look....I happen to like them.....

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15113720

Haha no, 650 for the body, not the headlights. Have some decent scratches on the hood and rear. I'll have to check out that place you mentioned and see what they have to say.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as the wheels, they're not bad by any means, I just tend to prefer wheels with thinner spokes. Here's some random ones I just found on goole that strike my fancy:

POST 21Original post

I have the same car and am new to owning a Porsche too. I love it and have the list of goodies I have been performing too. I love your rims, the turbos. I have them and they had some curb rash on one, I had them powdercoated black and love them. They are nice because you can actually fit your hand through and clean the whole rim when washing. You can't do that with a lot of the others. I also switched out the rotors and pads with ceramic pads and have much less dust and the braking is great. Enjoy and have fun. I am having a blast with all the goodies I have done or had done Silver/black emblem, wheels, side markers and window tinting are the cosmetics I have done so far.

POST 22Original post

Welcome to the 996 club, also known as the red haired step child's club of Porsche ownership.

POST 23Original post

$650 to polish the headlights??!!! Did I read that right? That cannot be accurate. For $650 you could have the entire vehicle detailed, inside and out, engine, and the headlights polished to perfection. It's not hard at all to polish the headlights, even the first time with the right tool.

Know exactly what you're doing before changing rims. These may be hollow spoke rims. Quite valuable. Check the PN on the inside rim, and look it up. Nice car. Don't drag the clutch, either in, or out but don't let it drag. When you need to do the clutch(soon), do the IMS too.

POST 26Original post

Great looking car! I love those wheels, give it a good washing and that might change your mind.

POST 27Original post

Nice looking ride! I am not a huge fan of that style wheel, but new ones are quite pricey. My car way fitted with 19" rims, and I prefer the look of theses wheels better. If I had to buy them, I would still be on the OEM wheels hahahah.

POST 28Original post

Nice 996! If it were me, I'd have a professional do a three stage paint correction with ceramic coating. You can do a good job, but a true professional will make it look better than brand new. Then I'd remove and restore the headlights myself. This is the easiest car to remove the headlights! Special headlight removal tool should be in the toolkit with the spare tire. A cheap $25 headlight restoration kit from Autozone and a drill, and it will look great in about 30 minutes. Then look at UV clear vinyl protection. That will keep them looking nice for years.

POST 29Original post

Congrats. Looks great. I like the stock wheels and would keep them personally. I would detail it, restore the headlights, take care of any maintenance, and then drive the wheels off of it. The only changes I would make is maybe to roll back the two-tone bumper and (pause to put flame suit on) put original orange side markers in (not the popular opinion, especially on RL, but I like the contrast of the orange on the side view, particularly on blue).

POST 30Original post

If you decide to do that, let me know. I have a small box of orange turn signals pulled from 911s and Boxster. I’ll send you a couple for free.

POST 31Original post

I was thinking as I typed that there are probably a few mountains of discarded orange side markers strewn here and there across the globe. Nice gesture for you to offer them to the OP.
