I was that kind of valet when I was 16...I would take any nice car for a 10 minute or more "test drive", not some thing I want done with my cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When you guys valet do you ask to have it kept up front? And if so what do you tip the guy to do so? I am not sure what the proper way to go about this is. I want it kept up front because I don't need some kid red lining my car while I am eating dinner lol.

POST 2Original post

here is some great advice: don't let valets touch your Porsche. Ask them if you can pay them and park it yourself out front. Ever seen Ferris Buellers day off? I was that kind of valet when I was 16...I would take any nice car for a 10 minute or more "test drive", not some thing I want done with my cars.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15127619

I didn't even think of that, I just assumed he/she would have to park it. I figured I would let them move it to the front spot while I watched. Ok so I pull up to the valet and say "Hey man can I park this right up front?" How much do I tip them for that?

POST 4Original post

I think the amount of tip depends on the area. If in Beverly Hills it will be different from Long Beach. Also what does parking normally cost there if any? Even just starting a Porsche let alone moving it by an inexperienced person can result in lots of damage. see this: https://globalnews.ca/video/4245156/...-upscale-hotel

Think that will buff out hahahahahah. Good point on area! I love going to California, I get to see many fellow Porsche owners, not many here in RI.

POST 6Original post

I had friends in high school that worked as valets, Do not let them touch your car! You don't ask, you hand him a $20.00 park it and tell them nicely to keep an eye on it for you.

POST 7Original post

If only Johnny Irish was still around. Hed have all the right answers. Dont valet. Park it on your own and throw the kid a sawbuck.

Even then, do you leave the key? Here's why I ask...The wife and I were somewhere near 808Bill at an upscale hotel. One day we came out on the way to go snorkel and there was a Ferrari of some sort sitting immediately in front of the valet area. As I walked up one of the valets jumped in fired it up and burped the throttle several times and quickly shut it off. I asked when he bought his new car. He looked pretty sheepish. Not sure I would want that to happen to my car. However, much better than a possible joyride as discussed above. For me if going somewhere that involves a valet...take the Rav4!

POST 11Original post

My issue is more with the fact that a lot of people dont know how to drive a stick properly. Riding the clutch or stalling and restarting it multiple times is not what I want done to my car. I went thru this with my kids when they wanted to learn to drive a stick. We took the 911 out and after a few minutes it was just too painful.

POST 12Original post

I haven't had any problems with valet on my 99 Coupe, But it's a Tip, I would be a LOT more hesitant with my 6MT. I just pull up leave it running and they always park it out front near the valet station so they can watch it (and probably think they will get a bigger tip that way). When I come back they don't even have to get it, it's right there, they just hand me the keys, I throw them a 5 spot and drive off.. (but this is in Bama).

POST 13Original post

^^ The problem is, unless you have a recording and surveillance system, you dont know how they drove the car. If they were imbeciles, the could start the car and redline is park or neutral. Ive done valet on some of my cars in the past, but with my current 911, I just dont want to take the risk, however large or small it is.

POST 14Original post

The Valet will probably say he didn't let the Lexus SUV park in front, and it cost 3x as much as your 996.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15129787

Its not about cost, its about the delicacy of the car. I don't need some punk kid raving the crap out of it. My other cars are also 3-4 times as much, but they also aren't Porsches so the valet isn't going to try and beat the crap out of them...

POST 16Original post

"valet" Used as a noun: a dumbazz punk kid who will find creative ways to destroy your vehicle before shrugging "dunnoitwuzdatwaywhenyousegotshere" When used as a verb: to systematically destroy a vehicle while assuming less than zero culpability, remorse or responsibility.

POST 18Original post

I've watched enough VINWiki YouTube valet stories to know that I'm not going to valet mine anytime soon. I'll park it myself, thank you.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 15129625

I agree, I had a customer/friend with a cherry 05 997.1 red with aero that valeted his 911, and when they went to get it he saw the valet do a burnout and/or hold it on redline coming out of the parking lot. Then had a massive oil leak that turned out to be the rubber cam plug/cam (the big brown one) blew out from the backpressure. The valet was fired and the Hotel/restaurant took responsibility for any damage. Luckily no damage was done other than the plug/cap coming out. Everyone thinks my car is 100k car (unless they are in the Porsche world and know its a 10k car), but I do enjoy seeing their misconception, and they would have a hard time beating it more than I do..but if they do, without my permission, and I catch them all hell will break loose !!

POST 20Original post

Seen a few youtube videos of hidden cameras catching valets rifling through customers glove boxes and stealing stuff too.

POST 22Original post

I was a valet for two years in Los Angeles at one of the most exclusive hotels. I "managed" the driveway and the valets which means I was the person who greeted the guest when they pulled up, gave them the ticket, and instructed the valet what to do with the car. Or parked it myself. I parked cars for months before taking over the driveway. I parked every single type of exotic car on planet earth. Celebrities every single day. I've parked at least 10 different cars for David Letterman on 50+ occasions. I have a lot to say on the issue from both the owner's perspective and the valet's perspective, but I'll keep it short. Here are my takeaways: $$$ Money talks and everything else is a non-factor. If you want special treatment pony up a serious tip $20+ or STFU take your ticket and be on your way. That's really the entire story but I'll go on. No one cares or is impressed by your Porsche, especially a 996. A true classic like a mint condition 1950's Ferrari 250 or Porsche 356, sure we'll take notice, but the tip is all that matters. I will start with the KING of owners, David Letterman. Dave, smartly, kept it very simple and never asked for ANYTHING, not one time did he request special treatment or act in any way what-so-ever that he was "special." In fact just the opposite. Letterman would pull up in some type of exotic car, mint condition always, get out, take the ticket, hand you a CRISP $50 bill (this was back in 1997) say "thank you" and be on his way. When he returned to pick up the car it was the same routine. The valet would pull up in the vehicle, Dave would say "thank you" and hand over another $50 bill. I have interacted with hundreds of "celebrities" and the only one that ranks higher than Letterman is Gregory Hines (another story). Letterman's vehicle and everything inside was treated like gold. He left high value items, money, whatever in the car and it was never touched. If a valet stole something from a repeat customer like Letterman or abused his car in any way we would have physically beat down that valet during off hours at a bar far from the hotel. Fortunately it never came to that. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the polar opposite of Letterman. A complete A-hole in every single way imaginable. The worst. (edited because the OP was offended) In my experience if an individual worries about their vehicle when out for a good time, they might be in over their head financially with that car. Drive a car you don't worry about and enjoy life. As with most material possessions, don't hand them over to strangers if it will create stress, just not worth it. Have some faith in people. If valeting stress free is not possible then DO NOT VALET YOUR CAR! If the situation makes valet mandatory then take the ticket, take 5 seconds out of your life and make direct eye contact with the valet, give the valet $10 and say sincerely "thank you very much" and walk away. Whatever happens, happens, but that is a good long term strategy.

POST 23Original post

EJ: Well put. Question: I was always under the impression that you only tipped the guy that bring the car back to you. What you say makes sense, though.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15132422

You sound like a pleasant person, it was just a question. Why be such an a-hole about it? Cant afford the car? LMFAO, you know me? Who said stressed or worried, I just don't want dicks like you driving it and based on your answer is my exact reason... I always look people in the eye, and treat everyone with respect, well not a-holes like you but most people.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 15132665

Oh geez, I was speaking in general terms to the entire population not you specifically. I was talking about my general impressions about everyone after two years full time parking cars in my younger days. I am quite pleasant.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 15132565

No doubt about it the custom is tipping at the end when the car is returned. But the person with the best opportunity to "abuse" your car or park it in a "good" spot is the valet who parks it initially. And let me apologize in advance if I have offended you. Ya never know.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 15132422

Im guessing at least once, you probably flogged someones car, right? I mean, I wouldnt blame you so much, especially if the guy was an a-hole or tipped you $0.50. And you might still have a 99.99% track record if you parked 1,000 cars. But thats still no consolation to the 1 guys car that was flogged... To your point, if its going to keep you thinking about your car, DONT VALET. Then again, most people arent really **** about cars like we are. I would assume Letterman wasnt.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Clearly we are on different pages, I was just asking about getting the car left up front. You concluded that I am worried about it, and possibly can't afford it financially when all I want is to not come out to a 17k bill for a blown engine. Can I afford to replace it, yep, I just don't want to have to because some kid beat the crap out of it. EJ, your answer all together was very condescending that is all... I suppose its possible you didn't mean to sound like a complete douche, but if you read it out loud to yourself you may realize it was awfully bitchy.

POST 29Original post

Ferris Bueller comes to mind. I never, never ever Valet my P cars in 40 years of owning many nice sports cars. That said; Once, a few months ago at a private party in BH (great long time friend birthday party) I was forced to allow private parking valet service take my car. I didnt want to be a dick P car guy so I caved. Little did I know at the time they had to drive down the hill a bit to a large lot for the cars. First scrap on my front lip and bottom of the car from the kid who must have hit the driveway entrance.exit. didnt see it until a few days later after car was put back on home lift. Super bummer. I never ever valet. Next time I will leave or drive a different car.

FWIW, I didn't take this as an attack at all. General comments not directed at you personally and intended to be helpful. I can see how you may have read it the way you did, but I don't think it was meant that way at all. In fact, when I first read your response I struggled to make the connection.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 15133224

Um, okay. Let me try to be even more clear. I was not directing my comments at you. However I completely agree it could be read that way, the way I worded it originally could certainly be reasonably read that way. In MY mind when I said "you" I was talking to the forum audience, the general universal "you." So again to be perfectly clear, I apologize if you were offended or felt attacked. In my ten years and 1,000+ posts of experience on this forum I can assure you this is not the place for "thin-skinned" people or those easily offended. If you search deep enough into my posts you will find several posts where I tried to fight the good fight and suggested people treat each other better and less hostile or mean or blunt in the comments section. I was soundly and universally told to go love myself. This is a "free for all" the "wild west" etc.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 15127608

OP, to answer your questions 1.) No. 1a.) n/a 2. ) I would hold a $20 clearly visible at eye level when I ask this question. "Can you keep the car up front?" If the answer is "Yes." Hand over the $20 and enjoy your evening. If the answer is "No." Hand over $5 and enjoy your evening.

POST 33Original post

You could add a SprintBooster. It has a Valet mode which limits the throttle to a certain level. Of course this only applies to cars with e-gas and it does not prevent your car from being scratched.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
