Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have replaced many of them and there is no preventive maintenance that will avoid it.
Leading evidence: 'Replace many of them and there is no preventive maintenance' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check metallic debris, esp ferrous' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have a large magnet on my drain plug so I can examine for ferrous material when I change the fluid.

I was thinking of changing the trans fluid and adding some lucas oil stabilizer upon filling it with new fluid.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

in my recently acquired 996 C2 6-speed manual, I am getting faint speed dependent whine..... it does not seem to care about loading one side of the car or the other, and steering input doesn't seem to effect it either, so I am leaning toward pinion bearing, or output shaft bearings.
car has 135K on it, is in relatively good shape, bone stock other than the CD player.

Anyone have any first hand experience with this?
hoping to prevent or at least noticeably postpone the need for maintenance on the gear box.
any insight would be helpful. Have had tons of BMWs but this is my first Stutgart made automobile.
Thanks
When I bought mine in January with 55k on the ODO, I noticed the same thing. It is a very faint noise on acceleration. I checked the trans fluid and it is to the top and didn't look knarly. I decided it is normal and continue to drive it with no change in the sound. I have put 8k miles on it, including a track event. Not sure that this helps you, but it is a data point.
Drain and check for metallic debris, esp ferrous. The pinion bearing if failing will shed ferrous material.
I have a large magnet on my drain plug so I can examine for ferrous material when I change the fluid.
My car at 63,000 miles had the same whine. Had the Indy remove it and they found the pinion bearing had disentegrated. The cost to fix the gears and take care of the second gear pop out was $$$ and decided a better option was to buy a rebuilt box from GBox. Now runs butter smooth and no noise. Not a cheap solution but I could not live with the noise.
Some cars have a light ring gear noise from day 1, and you can only hear it if you tune in on it, The only problem is a pinion bearing can make the same noise and act the same ie only makes the light noise when in a light load, goes away on coast. The big difference is the pinion bearing noise WILL get worse within a few thousand miles and will start to make noise whether your in a load or not and usually worse in 3rd gear. I have replaced many of them and there is no preventive maintenance that will avoid it. It is a sealed factory greased (supposedly lifetime) bearing. It requires complete disassembly all gears removed, it is the last thing to come off the shaft. A friend of mine did drive his for 10k miles(highway) before it go so bad there was no more waiting, but I would not advise that, he got lucky.
The Pinion bearing is a well known weak point, difficult and expensive to replace. Very few places can do the job. GBox is one of the few. Maybe call California Motorsports also?
A 'good used' 6 speed is a gamble and expensive.
We've had some epic Threads where a very few ppl have done this job diy. Way beyond the skill+ equipment standard of most of us. Easy to totally screw up the gearbox without the tools+ equipment and knowledge. Nothing of great use in the FSM for this.
We really need a super detailed DIY for this job. Even with that ,the Instructions may simply convince you to ship the 'box to the experts.
ive done my share of Nissan gearboxes, (Skyline GTRs have some known weakpoints once you start upping the power) But you don't really need many specialty tools to deal with them. just a press and a fork to separate some things.
If that is the kind of specialty tools we are talking..... cool, rock and roll, I will get this done and take pics along the way. If it is much more than that I might be hesitant to tinker with it.
anyone have a list of required tools to get this done?
