But this looks like a generic part and could be used on either seat.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I want to change the seat belt receptacles in my 2003 911 996, I have purchased one that says it is the right passenger side. But this looks like a generic part and could be used on either seat. Can someone tell me if this is really the case or is each side a unique part? Thank you.

POST 2Original post

The drivers side has a cable attached to it whereas the passenger side does not. You could install one that is not cabled but I'd say you'd need to program the DME with a PIWIS or take a trip to the dealership. If not you might get the airbag warning light (weird but yes its one warning light for a failure another for a warning its not plugged in).

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank You dan_189. The new part I have recieved has a wire on it, and the old recepticle that is on the car in the passager side also has a wire, I cannot confirm if this is connected (but I think it is). I also cannot confirm that it has a function (it would normally), but I will test. When I take the seat out I can tell you more. Maybe on Friday. Thanks again

POST 4Original post

The seatbelts in my car (2000 carerra) are side specific. I think this matters a lot because of the wierd ball bearing locking system they employ. The belts are slightly angled in their installed position. If the retraction mechanism isn't in the correct orientation, the belt locks up. I got familiar with this because I stupidly partially disassembled one (the coil spring kind of exploded at that point) so I had to replace it. With nothing better to do with the old one, I messed around trying to understand the locking mechanism. It seems rather complicated for what it does... However, what I did discover is that the orientation of the retracting mechanism matters a LOT to correct functioning. All of my snafu could have been avoided if I simply moved the retracting mechanism into the right orientation, rather than assuming it was damaged. Lesson learned, at the expense of a replacement seat belt assembly.

Thank You cds72911 Good advice, I will change the Right side for the right side. I may just try it in the left and see how it works out, just for our information.

Here is an update. I took out both seats and looked at the recepticles in each. The drivers seat has a wire with 4 pins and the passenger seat has a wire with 2 pins. The new recepticle that I have has only 2 pins so I installed this in the passenger side. I cannot say what the pins do, the passager side does not appear to trigger the no seatbelt message on the display, but maybe it is related to the airbag. I hope this helps anybody who is looking at doing this. Thank you again for all the advice.
