Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The recent weather and flooding issues have led to some very sad story's. Loss of life followed by damages to houses and utilities is clearly the priority. But as the clear up begins you start to hear of the loss of the cars and bikes and the small stuff that is personal to each of us. I have been sat over here wondering what can be done - short term -as more storms will come and other than move to high ground what best practice has come out of the terrible weather. One suggestion seems to be disconnect the battery to stop it shorting the electrics. Is it it not possible to bag up a car so either pallet wrap or a huge sheet of polythene gaffa taped in a knot at the top to make it water proof? Any ideas or thoughts? Oil S-Rick

POST 3Original post

We just had floods ourselves in Ottawa and the vapor barrier walls we built did a really good job at keeping water out. One of the houses we were doing had 5ft sandbag walls completely around it. Those sandbags walls were covered in that vapor barrier plastic and water had a hard time getting through. To the point that we were dry on the house side of the wall while there was water 6" down from the top of the wall in the river side. I think with a few layers of that plastic around the cars, it would minimize damage for sure

POST 4Original post

a battery disconnect will not stop the damage from water getting into the electronics and the bag would have to be made of a very tough material to prevent punctures . I would not bother with one ...too much trouble to prevent just the right water level, too little water and it was a waste of time....i doubt it would hold if up to and above the roof .....that said i bet ya it sells

POST 5Original post

Once trippled up the plastick will be hard to penetrate. We had docks and other debris floating down the river hitting us and our walls it woud puncture the 1st layer but still had 2 layers and a sandbag wall to get through.

POST 6Original post

I don't understand why we don't do what animals would do: flee. Step 1 - get in car. Step 2 - drive to higher ground. Step 3 - watch the world burn, remember to bring something to sip on. Then again, unlike most houses, flood damage is (probably) covered by your insurance. In the idea of creating scarcity, and driving prices up, I recommend all 996 owners park their cars near rivers.

that would require they really take the car out of their garage .....they would look at you as being mad

POST 8Original post

I was in the latest hurricane Irma so this kind of hits close to home even though I didn't lose anything thank the Lord. While searching around for a similar issue as this I came across this: https://www.floodguardph.com/ Not affiliated in any way just thought it was a damn good idea for very little money (200-300 I think?). Pretty interesting and answers the OP question about bagging up a car. I can only imagine how people that lost anything to everything must feel and my heart breaks for them, thoughts and prayers to anyone that was affected.

POST 9Original post

They make fillable water dams rated up to "X" amount of feet, although they get pricey since some are $20,000 or more, but they can cut off the perimeter of an entire house or two. Then again, if you really want to protect your car, get a lift and leave it all the way up. Or...., maybe drop it off in a neighboring state at a storage unit for a month or two.

POST 10Original post

I vote for a lift! As it it would be awesome to have, anyway.

POST 12Original post

They do make auto body bags... I would have had my car trucked up to higher ground if I new a flood was coming!

I saw that on FB. Also saw several photos of flooded nice cars in garages that could have been saved if the owner had just taken 15 minutes to put them up on 4 jackstands before evacuating.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
