My AC compressor is making a growling noise which comes and goes when the AC is switched on and off. My indi says that the compressor is failing probably due to a recharge not adding correct amount of oil resulting in damage. Says there is nothing to be done just use until it fails. Would it prolong the life of the compressor if it was purged and recharged with the correct mixture of refrigerant and oil? 2004 coupe with 65K miles. Thanks

Prolong but probably not save. Who in the world did you have do a recharge on the system and they not put in the oil? A/C 101 basics. The bearings are going now. Soon it will freeze up and take your serpentine belt for a ride.

Not on my watch and no indication in the repair maintenance records. Previous owner was a porsche guy so if it must have been original owner. Sounds like is would be best to replace now and not wait for failure.

Replaced my compressor with clutch, expansion valve and dryer last year. The clutch had gone out. Got the compressor from Rock Auto for about $300 with clutch. Porsche lists the part for almost $1,700. The one from Rock Auto was the exact same Denso unit that came in the car new! Unbelievable how much Porsche charges for the same unit. Of course mine did not come in a box marked Porsche��
