There are two octane ratings: the RON method (used in Europe), MON (used elsewhere), and to make it even less straightforward, the US rating system, which is the average of the sum of RON and MON.

Suggestion · Original poster

Most people use the 95 octane at $1.60/gal but I was able to find one of the 4 stations on the island that sell "Super" at 98 octane.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pretty excited! Most people use the 95 octane at $1.60/gal but I was able to find one of the 4 stations on the island that sell "Super" at 98 octane. Of course, it is pretty spendy at $2.35/gal. I can already tell with my "butt dyno" that I am getting at least another 20 HP.

POST 2Original post

Always put BP Premium in the tank which is one of the few here at 98RON. Now only the price, 7,80 US/gallon....

We do. It's a different measurement system. EU 95/98 is US 91/93.

There are two octane ratings: the RON method (used in Europe), MON (used elsewhere), and to make it even less straightforward, the US rating system, which is the average of the sum of RON and MON. You know, because it wasn't confusing enough just having two different ratings. To convert Euro to US: US=RON*(21/22) To convert US to Euro: RON = US*(22/21)

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know it is the same as 93, but it makes me giggle inside when you pull up to the gold pump with "Super 98" on the side. I have been running on the 95(91) for the past couple years. They introduced the 98 (93) only about a year ago here.

POST 7Original post

In the US we get the stupid bonus of up to 10% ethanol in our gas. It is very difficult to find a station with "pure" non-ethanol 93 octane gas. I would love to try some pure 98 octane!

POST 8Original post

I found another gas station that sells 102, but I understood anything above 98 does not make sense for a 996.

POST 9Original post

The 996, at least in the USA is tuned for 93 octane RON/MON. Any higher octane won't make a difference because the ECU will compensate. In my area we only have 91 octane but I found a 100 octane pump (with ethanol) in my area and I've mixed a little bit of that in with some 91 to make my own 93. The car runs better noticeably especially on hot days.
