Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Phil installed the HUD on his C4S, but didn't like what he saw on the windshield, so he disconnected it!

It's probably a little more "Boy Racer"...too much ricer for my taste, but if it had the speed as well as that sexy-looking tach, I'd probably give it a shot...

It's built for out-and-out racers and, in fact, when displaying the tach information, changes the color of the display when the rpms equal the pre-programmed shift point.

One) to see our wittle 4 legged friends at night a bit easier and two) To see the donut eaters a bit farther away if they aren't using active radar.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I alternate between driving my Targa and my Vette. I like both cars for different reasons and am in no hurry to rid myself of either one. But there are two things on my Vette that I wish were on my Targa. The first is the magnetic suspension setup and I know that it will never happen.
The second, though, is the HUD display.
I really wish my Targa had this feature and I've started to look around and see if there is some retro-fit that could be cobbled together to get close to this result.
I have found a HUD that displays direction and speed only. It gathers the information from traciking GPS satellites. These seem to be very affordable (~$100 to $150), but they just sort of lay on the dashboard...not exactly what I had in mind and they don't have a display for rpms.
Then, I've found a really neat setup that displays the rpms, but no indicated speed. It's built for out-and-out racers and, in fact, when displaying the tach information, changes the color of the display when the rpms equal the pre-programmed shift point.
I was just curious if any of you have looked into adding a HUD to your 996? And if you did, what you found?
My current path of exploration is that I know Continental (Siemens) VDO makes most of the gauges for our cars. They also make the HUD used in 5-series and 6-series BMWs. Could a BMW HUD be shoe-horned into my 996?
What do you think?
Hmmm...Never thought about a HUD but I do want to do a forward facing Thermal camera. One) to see our wittle 4 legged friends at night a bit easier and two) To see the donut eaters a bit farther away if they aren't using active radar.
Course the only camera I found was $2k and was only rated for a 100yrd range.
The HUD is a great idea. Could you share the units you found? Links?
Sure. Here are the 3 I've found...
First, is the GPS unit. Speed only...probably works...cheezy looking...but how can you complain about the price.

Not sure I like the plastic square on the windshield to get the numbers to show up.
Then, there is this one is made by PlasmaGlow. The graphics on the site look great, but you still have to wonder how it would look in real life. It's probably a little more "Boy Racer"...too much ricer for my taste, but if it had the speed as well as that sexy-looking tach, I'd probably give it a shot...

Finally, the most comprehesive model is this one by Defi...

As I understand it, you can hook up this basic module and get speed and tach on the HUD or you can get way carried away and buy there central module and a bunch of various sending units and get anything you want on the little window...stuff like oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, fuel pressure, etc., etc., etc.
That's pretty much what I've found so far, but I'm still looking.
ohh I am late to the party, nice photoshop Tim, I laughed really hard at the light and return to garage comment, the wayne's had me over the edge !
I was thinkingn how do you get a 9v battery to do all that!
I've had three vetts including a ZR-1 and the MOST useful feature was the HUD. You never have to look down for speed or the tach. It's such an amazing safety feature I don't know why it's not on every upscale car.
Please keep us informed what you find. I'd do it in a second.
