Just 30 mins ago driving on highway 4 and a deer jumped out at the last second. No chance to avoid it I'm really hoping I can get my car fixed its not written off. Looks like hood, fenders, headlights, bumper and windscreen. Car still drives... Now over to the West Coast section to look around for a body shop

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah got showered from glass as its head hit the windscreen right in the corner and punched through. We got it all on dashcam, will try and get the video up at some point.

POST 6Original post

Ouch, Glad you're OK. I just missed one last year with my pickup truck but my trailers fender hit it.

POST 7Original post

DAAAAMN! Truly glad you are ok. I bet it was thrilling/frightening for a few nano seconds. Good luck on the repairs.

POST 8Original post

Ohh, that's doesn't look good. Very good you weren't hurt. Really fortunate it didn't come up over the windshield onto you. Porsches are the best cars to have a crash in.

POST 9Original post

A deer is the reason I got my 996. Back in October I hit an 8 pointer on my motorcycle (Speed Triple, miss it). I had zero time to react as he sprinted across the road. Broke my collar bone, fractured some ribs, tore cartilage in my knee, sprained both thumbs, and I think my hip is a little screwed up. Anyway, I hate deer. Hope your 996 lives to see another day unlike my totaled bike.

POST 10Original post

Deer are always a threat, but especially so in matting season when they move around a lot more. About 15 years ago I had a friend who hit a buck. It totaled his car and he was hospitalized. Happy that the OP was not injured. Cars are easy to repair, not so with humans.

POST 11Original post

Glad you're OK and hope your car is fixable. I hate deer here where I live--they have no natural predators left and they have pretty much overrun the area. My step son hit a deer and totaled his car so my wife got a new car and gave him her hand-me-down. She had the new car 2 days and I was driving us to dinner and another freaking deer jumped out in front of us. There was car right next to me so I couldn't swerve. I slammed on the brakes and ended up not hitting it that hard, but still had $4000 damage. Argh!

POST 12Original post

Glad you are ok. That must have been one hell of a deer taking out both headlights

POST 13Original post

Glad no one was hurt. Stands a good chance of working out as a total. But, you probably will have the option of retaining the salvage at a cost. That might also make sense if you can source enough used parts & make a solid repair of it. Good luck.

POST 14Original post

Glad you're okay. That's some scary stuff. My guess is that the car is totaled - unless you make out like Cuda did and not only get the car fixed, but get millions of dollars and a 991. My car needed a driver's door, a rear quarter panel, and a wheel. It came within a few dollars of the insurance company totaling the car. The full retail on the headlights alone are about $7k, I'm not saying you can't get them for less, but that may factor into the insurance company's decision.

POST 17Original post

No one ever cares about the deer. So I will. Glad you're ok. Hope the car can be fixed. How's the deer? Did you find him. Hope he/she is ok. To bad innocent deer are killed and hurt like this. I suppose if it were a dog some of you would care. Last time I asked about the fate of the deer the mods threw points at me....

POST 18Original post

What a bummer, but the best is you are ok. Hope the animal is not suffering too, but I'll lean towards the human life side first. I count my blessings with the near misses I've had (knock on wood). Best wishes for your car too.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 15803542

...."Hope the animal is not suffering too"... Yes humans first never said otherwise, but I care of animals too, however second. Usually second, depends on the human.

POST 20Original post

Glad you're OK! Car is likely totaled, but easy to rebuild with used parts from eBay. I would buy back from the insurance company and fix it and drive it. The rest of the insurance money can be used for fun mods and other toys. If you don't want to fix it, buy it back and resell to one of us, or to a dismantler, and make a quick grand or two. I'm sure someone, including me, would be interested if the price is right.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again everyone. I'm really hoping its not totaled, I don't know what I would replace it with. When I got it I put an LN dual row IMS, new clutch, new AOS, new engine mounts, water pump, low temp thermostat etc etc I also think the engine is in great shape, so I got a 'good one' it runs perfect If its totaled and I go look at another I'm right back at square one. I take a gamble on another 996 and I have to go through all that crap all over again doing the upgrades and stuff. What happens if I buy it from the insurance and decide to fix it myself? would it have a salvage title? I don't want a salvage title car If its totaled and I looked at other cars there is nothing close to it, maybe a Honda 2000? Lotus Elise's are going for $30k+ now, Evora's are $38k+ I don't like BMW's...blughgghhhhhh

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15803528

The deer was dead, it looks like its head hit the windscreen in the corner which is why it punched through. It probably broke its neck as it got thrown 30-40 feet right across the road on the shoulder of the opposite side

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 15803600

I think the headlights , hood,1 fender, and bumper would total it. Yes, if you buy it back it will have a salvage title. Tough to sell, and may be a problem getting full coverage insurance. MY insurance co won't cover a car that they total. Because of insurance umbrella policy, I can't insure one that has been totaled by them, so I would have to see if they would exclude it from my umbrella policy. That's why I usually shy away from salvage titles. But I'd consider one in good mechanical condition that looks like I could repair myself. (Which it looks like yours fits) If they total it, ask about buy back! I'm definitely interested and would hope to add to your cost to make it worthwhile!! I might flip it, but I would hope to hold onto it as a second car if it ran well. I normally don't deal with out of state cars, but I'd do it for a Rennlist member I "know." The best choice for replacing a 996 is a 996 or 997 IMHO. If something totals mine, and it is not worth it to me to fix, then I'd buy another 996 or a 997. I'll always own a 996 or 997 from now on.

POST 24Original post

POST 25Original post

Thanks for that Chris. Wrong place wrong time accident. GL on repair/replace...

POST 26Original post

Glad you are ok. I will be shocked if that's not totalled. If it is you'll have no trouble selling it here. Good luck with the adjuster.

POST 27Original post

IMHO..Insurance companies seem to be totaling more and more cars there is a HUGE salvage yard near my studio,, lots of trucks arriving all day long with cars that seem to have not too much "visible" damage.... If it were my car I would definitely try to "buy it back", the repairs do not look very extensive...use used parts...it would make a great DD with everything you've done to it. A salvage title is not the worst thing in the world, these cars are very "sale-able"...take extensive pix and make a "presentation", there are lots of guys who perhaps can't afford a "queen", looking for an "inexpensive" Porsche..... PRICE is the key....(and if you don't intend to keep it after, don't go overboard with the repair costs...)

POST 28Original post

Sorry to hear about the car, glad you are OK. A number of years ago I️ had an encounter with a deer. Ive been driving for 25 years and well over a half a million miles and its the only time Ive ever hit anything. I️ was headed down I️ -196 in Michigan and its a divided highway where they dont mow the median. The sucker just jumped out in front of me, I️ had zero time to react. I️ hit him so hard, he cut his jugular on the right front fender and the last I️ saw He head was facing downward as he sailed past the passenger window, body facing up as he was heading INTO the air. Luckily, nobody got hurt, but he totaled a very nice example of the best minivan ever made, the Mazda MPV. Im so angry I️ could never find another nice example after that. Heres the gory details-

POST 29Original post

I have hit 4 deer in my life. My Nissan Pathfinder's front end was on top of one. Called my dad and the troopers. They had to put a bullet in it to stop it from suffering. My father put it in his truck and butchered it (hunter) to eat. Another one the trooper and I had to search in the woods and follow the blood trail until we found it. The third broke its leg but was not able to find it after 1.5 hours of looking. I was lucky all times minimal damage to the car and none to me. A friend hit one in his Mazda and almost died. He's pretty disabled. My brother hit one on his bike. He put it up for sale and never rode again. I am sympathetic to these animals. After all, we are the ones who invade their nature. I still can't help feeling that those large rodents are an infestation... I drive a salvage title 996 and couldn't care less. Insurance never asked me about salvage Minor front end damage not as extensive as yours. But I fixed up the car and have been running it with permagrin ever since! Buy back from insurance it will definitely be totaled. One of us including me will definitely buy it from you if you do not want to fix yourself. I highly recommend you get it fixed and keep driving, PERFECT example of a well taken care of car!

Less than a week later I had someone stop over for a quote that had just gotten his car back from hitting a deer and it was the same car and color as the other guy. Both MK7 GTIs, in red, 4 doors and hit a deer in the same front passenger side spot.

POST 32Original post

Buy it back, pick up a roller, throw your engine and other good parts into it and call it a day. Youll be back in a 911 with a weekend worth of effort, with a known good drivetrain.

Oh man you just reminded me of one of the funniest calls into a radio show...I've hit two deer in my life and it sucks! So sorry Chris. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...5C62&FORM=VIRE I had a guy fly out of his drive way in reverse and totaled my 67 VW bus, Smashed in the front end and it was totaled. I got the insurance money, bought it back (I just put a new motor in it) and drove it for a year, then fixed it and had it on the road for another ten years...I made out good! As mentioned above buy it back and look for a cheap one running or a roller (they are out there) as you know I'm in one. Good luck!

POST 36Original post

Getting liability insurance for a rebuilt title should be no problem, full coverage may be more challenging. Not sure why an umbrella policy would care if anything but liability, this is a question. I am far from an insurance expert.

POST 37Original post

I think it depends on the state and insurance company. When my car was hit and the claims adjuster said that the car may be totaled, I asked about buying it back. He said they don't do that. That was Allstate in New York.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 15804896

I agree. I have a BMW with a salvage title that has been insured for 13 years first with USAA and then Hagerty. The Hagerty policy is an agreed value of $10,000. The salvage title has never been an issue.

POST 39Original post

Sorry to see that but glad that you are OK. I hit a deer in my Mustang one night driving home from the Detroit auto show with my son. I saw the deer running, I hit the brakes hard and swerved but the stupid deer stopped right in the middle of the road. Hit the deer in the *** end, but it ran off. Ended up being $5,400 in damage - bumper, hood, headlight (HID) assembly, front fender, and to add insult to injury the deer kicked the passenger door as he ran off. Fortunately we were not hurt, just mad. Ohio is over run with deer - did not realize that was a problem in California. Daryll

POST 41Original post

Not to change the intent of the posting, but I think that the deer actually need better education, and, shouldn't the signs face to the sides of the road, how can the deer see them when the sign is facing traffic...

Those are for the deer walking along the side of the road. They have other ones in the woods for the deer to see and know where to come out of the woods. Sheesh gotta 'splain everyting to youse peeples!

POST 43Original post

I had never made contact with a deer despite living in Georgia and South Carolina the past 38 years. A week ago, I drove the 996 to the house and safely tucked it away in my garage. I hopped in my Mazda to drive back to our other residence. It was a warm clear night around 11:30pm. I had a doe run across the road in front of me when I was traveling about 50 mph. It cleared to my right, so I immediately looked to my left since they often follow each other. The head of a deer running wide open suddenly appeared in the headlight beam. I didn't slow down in that split second, because I thought I could get ahead of it. No suck luck. It ran into me ah hit just behind the driver's door. It left two pretty good dents in the rear door.

POST 44Original post

Here in Hawaii, wild Boar are an issue (no predators) and are as bad as the dear population if not worse. Asian drivers visiting are our greatest threats on the roads here They try to do some really dangerous merging or U turns without looking...I'll probably get banned for saying that but it's true!

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 15803078

Holy bush cookies! That's a dent. You say that came from a deer? Musta been the size of an elephant. Just glad you're ok. Is that your wife in the picture? Don't know if you believe in prayer or not, but this would be a good time to start giving thanks! Count your blessings, sir. The car can be fixed. Bring it over to my house and I'll suck that monster dent out, I got one of those Ding King kits off the shopping network.

POST 46Original post

Sorry, its going to be a total. You can buy it back, negotiate in good faith. Don't get over-eager. A lot of that stuff is bolt off, bolt on, don't mess with bondo. So you'll have a branded title. You'll still have the car you like. Stuff happens, no injury to the humans, and the deer barely ever knew what hit him. BTW, don't hit an elk. EVAR.....

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update on this. I picked an approved shop for a repair estimate online; my ins company made it super easy. The shop I picked was a bit of a drive from my house but it seems to get great reviews and they have been in business since 1974... At first I really thought they would total it out when they saw the damage. But once the guy punched it all in and worked it up, he said the value of the car is $19k and the estimate for repair is $10k so they are moving ahead with repair! I think they will find a few things that need to do extra when they dig in, but he said that's ok there is still room in the budget without totaling the car.... Goes in the shop next Tuesday morning and should take a week to get done. I'll post after pics when its all done. So one more question for you guys, I want to save the under hood options sticker the paper one with all the codes on it. It looks super hard to remove without tearing it or destroying it. I'd like to re-glue it on the new hood. I'm thinking heat or steam might get it off? Any ideas?

POST 48Original post

Great news. I had a similar experience. A couple of tips: If they find something that puts the car over the limit, work with the shop and maybe put some money out of pocket to avoid the salvage title. My driver's door was replaced, so I took a photo of the Date of Manufacture tag which I knew would be lost when they replaced the door. Take a photo of your options list and print out a copy.

Well, you made it. Barely, usually 50% rule applies if the repairs are half the value of the car, they'll total it. If you had taken it to the stealer, they would est the repairs around $17k, and that would be that. It sounds like your ins co wants to keep you happy. All good, best of luck.

Perhaps you could keep the hood and/or cut a rectangle of metal including the sticker?

POST 53Original post

Take a picture and print a copy on avery adhesive sticker paper.

Well as a FYI I got the options sticker off today. It was very easy! I just marked the reverse side of the hood with a sharpie so I knew where the sticker was, then using a hot air gun on low I heated the area and starting in one of the corners pulled the sticker. Temperature was just a little too hot to touch directly. The sticker comes out quite easily, just go slow. I'll figure out either some new adhesive to apply it to the new hood when its all fixed.

First off, I hope your're ok! Second, if the insurance company does opt to write off your car for whatever reason, if you get a solid payout, you could just buy back you car, repair it, and then walk away with some nice cash in hand. Obviously this is assuming there is no frame damage and it just involves replacing the cosmetic parts.

Great job! I would scan it or take a high resolution picture of the label. There is a guy on the Porsche Facebook forums that reproduces these labels. He's done several for me and they look identical to the original. Even has that dot matrix print look too. I believe his charge is $30 + shipping. Happy to get you his email if you prefer to make some backups. Also, you really need to save the hood crest and rubber washer. I would save it for need projects or backup if something happens to the replacement.

Thank, I'll see how putting the old sticker back on goes. I opted to keep all the old parts so I get the badge and hood and old smashed lights etc car should be back mid next week

So I got the car back, when I picked it up I immediately had to take it back as a blinked bulb seemed to pop. So they fixed it while I waited. After a day or so I noticed they missed a small ding on the top of the fender, the deer must have bumped it with its knee or something as it tumbled. So they sent out a paintless dent guy to do it and charged it to the insurance. Overall I'm happy with the repair, paint is good, all lines up nicely. Windscreen is new, they replaced the whole windscreen surround too. I stuck my options sticker back under the hood with a gluestick. Glad to have it back, just got to get through smog now...lol
