Suggestion

* sourcing a stick-on crest to apply over the steering wheel crest (ala GT3RS hood crest) - this would have required body filling the existing crest, painting it, and applying a stupid-expensive sticker.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

35 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I spend $1000 to have my steering wheel recovered and this is what Donald puts on (see image). Now I have to get the fn thing off because it bugs me so bad. Two reasons one I got porked on the badge and two I am not sure if I can swap it out. Sometimes I just dont understand what the hell it is people are thinking. Customer is spending a grand but I dont care I will put this crappy badge on. Every time I see it I get pissed off. See something missing? How dumb a move on there part. Is it possible to remove it? I just bought a set of tools for removing interior parts and the like. The pop out stuff.

POST 2Original post

No personal experience, but from that photo, it looks like it may be installed from behind through a cutout in the leather. I wouldn't go prying on that, with the chance that it goes from bad to worse.

POST 3Original post

not too mention that if the airbag goes off you will have a piece of metal shooting at your face

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I must also say that will still send stuff to DCSW and that there work is phenomenal. He just made a mistake with this badge that’s all. The steering wheel is plush and done well. I just think the last thing someone spending a thousand bucks deserves at least a new Porsche badge. Now I have to find out if I can remove it and change them out.

POST 5Original post

I've had him do work on mine w few times and no issues... that said WTH happened that badge? Did you contact him? You removed the airbag...the you removed the center unit. You removed the "nut" holding the crest and replace. Did he not reuse your current crest?

POST 6Original post

Even if you have him recover the airbag, he would reuse your current crest. The only time he uses a different one is if you want a silver crest....and yours does not look like the silver crest...I'm confused

POST 9Original post

Yeah, that would bother me greatly too. Any chance you can post before and after photos or your steering wheel? I would love to see the entire wheel.... Thanks and I hope it gets sorted out to your satisfaction. Cheers!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The other side of the story is that he told me he had a used one in good condition. So Insaid that would be fine. I did not expect this. Pretty well worn is what I should have been told.

POST 13Original post

Have you talked to him about your dissatisfaction?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 15872078

It seems like impossibly bad judgment to use that badge and I think everyone would be just as upset as you are, but it still seems like the first action should be to call them rather than post on RL. That badge does not in any way match the description you relayed, it seems certain they will make it right. If they don't acknowledge the problem or want to do anything about it, then that is worthy of public discussion.

POST 16Original post

the badge is riveted from the factory, and I am sure don is not replacing or swapping those badges out considering liability and safety issues. In the future I would take it up with him before posting, did you not discuss things with him about the work before it was done?, we traded photos, fabric samples and e mails thru the process of the work I was having done with him,Dallas was a pleasure to work with.

POST 18Original post

The tri-spoke wheel I bought came with a screwed-up crest as well - I stripped the paint off of it and painted mine black-on-metal to go with my spartan interior. Some Testors model paint, some masking tape, and a couple hours of your time, and you can make that crest look like anything you want...

It's missing a crucial part though, the horse.

POST 21Original post

"Crucial" is apparently much more subjective than the word itself connotes.

POST 22Original post

I'm no airbag expert but should they not have put fabric over it and left it? I've never seen anyone wrap the airbag - just the steering wheel itself. Seems like a safety issue too. Also I wouldn't be happy with that badge but contacting them would be my first move as others have mentioned.

The paint applicator pen in that still of that video looks pretty handy for filling in the badge and for rock chips. Amazon has something similar ( Amazon Amazon ) I actually bought one of those applicators a while ago, but have never used it.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 15878156

I say crucial because it looks like a knockoff part on a once close to $100k car. You basically polished a turd. It would bother the hell out of me, just like it bothers the OP.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got a bad deal on this one. I want it fixed but I am not sending it back to him.

POST 26Original post

Why? What did he say or offer? These emblems are usually held in place with folded metal tabs or sometimes screwed in place to keep it from flying off and hitting you in the head when the airbag deploys. Quite easy to change out.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 15880749

This makes no sense. Did you contact him about it? You spent good money and it should be fixed at his expense. If you have another wheel to use, send it back!

I'd apologize that the condition of my crest might offend, but that would mandate me caring about internet opinions and feelings. Fortunately, I am free from such proclivities. Insisting on a showroom-new badge on a three-spoke wheel with a plastic airbag cover makes about as much sense as spending a thousand dollars to recover a three-spoke wheel for a 996. I think OP's a bit mad for spending that much dough on a non-Porsche part...but on the plus side, at least OP isn't just armchair quarterbacking. The crest that is integrated into the airbag cover is NOT a removable part - it is very thin, with very little mass, and it is FIRMLY secured to the airbag cover to prevent it from detaching when the airbag is deployed. The reason that OP's re-cover looks like butt around the crest is because the upholsterer chose (wisely, in my opinion) to allow the original crest to show through the hole than sticking a new part onto the airbag cover that would become a projectile if the bag ever deploys. Google image search for Takata airbag injuries if you're interested in seeing what a chunk of metal accelerated by a pyrotechnic charge can do to your face. As I was not able to find an OE-equivalent crest to install directly into the airbag cover in place of the OEM airbag cover crest, there appeared to be several SAFE options for dealing with a badly scratched-up crest: * sourcing a stick-on crest to apply over the steering wheel crest (ala GT3RS hood crest) - this would have required body filling the existing crest, painting it, and applying a stupid-expensive sticker. * sourcing a new or quality used airbag insert (including the cover) that works for the interior * sourcing a three-spoke airbag cover with a well-preserved crest. Removing the cover isn't complicated, but messing with explosive charges is potentially explosive. * recondition the existing crest as you see fit - the route I elected to go with MY turd. After removing the cover from my airbag and inspecting how the crest is mounted to the cover, I decided to not try removing the crest from the cover to refinish it. You can, however, easily remove the airbag module from the center of the wheel, which makes the detail work much more tolerable. I spent an hour or so removing the factory finish using q-tips and low-yield solvents so I wouldn't melt the plastic cover; I just applied black paint, let it set up, and scrubbed the exposed areas clean to make it not-quite-so-shiny. I recognize that "good enough" is subjective. I'm not suggesting that my paint job was fantastic - but it dovetails quite nicely with the rest of my 996's interior. The wonderful thing about DIY work is that if it the results "bother the hell" out of you, you can just continue working on it until the hell is content to stay where it belongs. If I didn't already have personalized plates, I'd seriously consider SHNYTRD

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 15878151

I'd paint a smiley face on it...Or, a scull and cross-bones!

POST 30Original post

Splitting the leather in the center of the wheel down until it's razor-thin and cementing it into the groove around the original crest would be what I'd ask my upholsterer to do if I was going to recover the airbag module cover.

POST 32Original post

I also have a tie-tack size Porsche crest. I've thought about grinding the backing metal down until it's as thin as possible and properly contoured so I can epoxy it onto the shield of the larger crest - but the car being a 996 and all, the list of things that actually NEED doing (like ANOTHER new ignition switch, fixing the plunger depth on the clutch switch, ANOTHER new starter, possibly another coolant overflow reservoir) is already plenty long. Plus, I'm way too lazy to actually effect that plan.

POST 33Original post

I'm confused as well. Why haven't you contacted the company that did the work? If you have, what was their response? This thread is of absolutely 0 value to anyone without that information.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 15890487

Or one of those smiling Poo Emojis. But seriously I'd have an artist just paint a horse on there.

POST 35Original post

I can understand being frustrated by a vendor if we had different expectations. I'd definitely give them a call and see if you can work it out. I have to admit, I have never taken the time to stare at the shield on the steering wheel. Does it provide a lot of value whether it has a horse on it or not? As a side note, who is the vendor? I have a metropol blue steering wheel with a black and silver crest that is spare parts and I wonder if he'd be interested in it as a core.
