Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

(Even with tight stitching soft top cars are not necessarily 100% water tight.) Be sure you carefully check the cabin floor and under the seats for any signs (feel or smell) of moisture.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Please add some thoughts on a wise offer price for a california car.
1999 Carrera convertible with hardtop
Details:
Engine replaced with all docs 2006 with improved rear main seal and internal IMS
Car has 114000 miles and new engine has 50,000 mi
has all records
new clutch/flywheel 1,000 miles ago at reputable euro-shop ($2,800)
new fuel pump 1,000 miles ago
rear window stitching loose at the bottom and window a little yellow tough to see though
driver's window regulator making noise, but still works
otherwise good looking car
I'm a first time 996 purchaser (multiple SCs in past years)
What's a good offer and what else should I be worried about?
Thanks, Chris
With an older car and especially one with a soft top with loose stitching at the rear window I worry about top leaks. (Even with tight stitching soft top cars are not necessarily 100% water tight.) Be sure you carefully check the cabin floor and under the seats for any signs (feel or smell) of moisture. Check along the door bottoms for any dampness of the carpet trim.
Check the body water drains for signs of blockage and water accumulation. The front ones are located under the plastic panels on either side of the battery box which is located under the front trunk lid. You'll need a Torx tool kit with the security tool bits (have a tiny hole in the center to clear a pip in the center of the Torx screw head) to remove the panels.
The water drains at the rear of the car appear to be under the clam shell on either side of the top. A partially raised or lowered top should have the clamshell open to check the drains.
If the rest of the top is in good condition, the window can be replaced. Don't wait for the window regulator to fail...fix it now. As for price...the new engine means nothing at this point...it has 50k of someone else's miles on it. In fact because of the engine change (and the other work needed) I deduct some dollars...$15k absolutely tops.
A local dealer has a 99' 996 C2 Cab for sale with either 51, or 71K miles.. I forget which..
Anyway, we were tasked with repairing the engine, and it'll be ready to go soon. Its a super clean black/ black example- if you are interested.
^^ best PPI you can ask for.
On the one advertised, I agree with 16-19k. I do like the '06 crate engines. I have one with 10k track miles on it, more range 1 over revs than the DME can count, and it's still coming back with good UOA's. It will be going in my future DD in the spring.
Show up on time, be polite and smile. Tell him you like the color, then pick the car apart. Make him aware that you're interested and that you brought cash and are ready to buy it now, if indeed you are. Then smile and ask him how much he really wants for his 10,000 dollar car, and let the negotiation begin. It has 114k miles on the car, regardless of the engine replacement. Anyone can pay retail. Don't be that guy. There are plenty of 996's out there, so walking away from several in order to get the right deal for yourself is worth the effort. Be patient and find the guy with the car that you want that NEEDS the money. Yes, I'm a seller's nightmare
