Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

does that only come on at certain temps or is it supposed to run constantly.
Leading evidence: 'Run constantly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run constantly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

does that only come on at certain temps or is it supposed to run constantly. I opened the hood with the engine running and it was not running, so just curious if it temp controlled or not working....thanks
"I opened the hood with the engine running and it was not running"
The fan doesn't run no matter what the temperature is if the engine hood is open - safety reasons.
The engine lid fan is controlled by a sensor on the left side of the engine, in a rubber grommet on the manifold. You can use a heat gun (with a heat resistant backing behind the sensor) to determine if the sensor is working. If it gets up to temp and the fan comes on you are good. This will work whether the rear engine cover is open or closed (I am not aware of any sensor that indicates whether he rear deck lid is open/closed) on the 996.
From the service manual...
"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.
After-running of engine compartment fan
If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds."
