Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The engine was "repaired" under warranty, the lifters on one bank were replaced, and this addressed the noise, but the customer refused to accept the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 2Original post

I wouldn't hesitate if the price is right. How much are they asking?

POST 3Original post

The buyback is no big deal at this point. Of course, there are some buyers that will turn up their noses at it because it is not a "no stories" car. But, with 80k miles on it, those buyers wouldn't consider this car anyway (in the 996tt world, that's considered high mileage). Buy it and you'll love it. Ask me how I know.

POST 4Original post

I once bought a buyback BMW and regretted it. The trouble with cars that have a history like this is that you will never be sure if the history is correct. The buyback I bought was for the differential on an M5, but later on, after I owned it, CarFax reported that my car was previously stolen. I ended up selling my car at a further loss than the originally discounted amount.

POST 5Original post

If you're buying to drive, then go for it. If you're buying to collect, skip.

Something wrong at 10K miles was 70K miles ago. If the car test ride/drives without any issues and passes a PPI well, there you go. OTOH, a "buyback" is not necessarily to be taken lightly. However, I know at least one case where a Porsche customer accepted a new 996 -- this back in 2002 when I bought my Boxster -- and the 996 engine developed some valve ticking. The engine was "repaired" under warranty, the lifters on one bank were replaced, and this addressed the noise, but the customer refused to accept the car. Something about a new car needing that level of engine "work" within just a few miles (just a couple of thousand as I recall) after being bought new just ruined the car to the owner. The dealer (I don't think the factory was involved) "bought back" the car and the customer bought something else. Were I you I'd feel a little better about the car if I could find some paperwork that details exactly why the car was brought back. Whether this paperwork exists or not though who knows? The car should be insurable but my advice is to ask just to be sure.

POST 7Original post

I'd be all over it as long as the price wasn't crazy. Anything under $40k if it's a stick is fair IMO.
